SENIORS_____ L H S TUPPEN LAKE, NEW YORK UHISEAN-1958 PRESENTED BY- i dEDICM'oN MR. LAWERENCE P. QUINN Mr. Quinn who is no longer associated with our school, nevertheless, has left his mark on its students. Throughout our high school years he had great effect on our lives. He set us a fine example to live by and showed us the value of high ideals. During his 35 years of service to the youth of our community he was ever an inspiration and guiding light. For this reason our class hereby dedicates its yearbook to Mr. L. P. Quinn. I The students of Tupper Lake High School are unaware of the important role played by our Board of Education in running our high school. They don’t realize that the Board makes possible our athletic schedules and our participation in interscholastic activities. The men on our Board, Amos J. LaBarge, President; Lee C. Oldfield, Clerk; Earl W. Wilson,Treasurer; Ernest J. Wood, William E. Perry, and Thomas K. Somers, assisted by Mr. Joseph Donovan and Mr. Fred Baker, who in his first year is doing a fine job give their time selflessly to be sure that the pupils of our high school will have a pleasant'school to attend. For their quiet but entirely necessary help, we the Senior class wish to thank them all for their part in makii« our high school years pleasant ones. ROW ONE: Amos J. LaBarge Lee C. SENIOR CLASS ADVISORS Mrs. Austin, Mr. Stubley and Miss Proulx Susann Windsor. Vice-President; Nancy J. Peets, Secretary; Larry Savard, President; Alden Dumas, Treasurer. We began our Senior year with three very cooperative advisors. Miss Proulx, Mrs. Austin, and Mr. Stubley. Early in September we met to elect our class officers; Larry Savard, President; Susann Windsor, Vice-President; Nancy J. Peets, Secretary; Alden Dumas, Treasurer. Because there was no Dramatics Club organized this year, the Senior Class cheerfully sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance. The dance was very successful and it will be quite a long while before the committee will forget the trips to the dump for the decorations. In the latter part of November, we elected a capable Thisean Staff to edit the yearbook. To finance this yearbook, the Seniors sold Christmas Cards. In late December, the individual Senior pictures were taken by a very able photographer, Mr. Eby from Saranac Lake. The group pictures were taken in January and we also chose our class motto, song, flower, and colors then. The mono; Our character is our will, for what we will, we are. The song; You’ll Never Walk Alone. The flower or flowers we should say; pink carnations and red sweetheart roses which will be carried by the girls on graduation night in nosegay form. The colors; aqua and silver. Presently we are preparing for a minstrel show for our contribution to the assembly program. Wondering what John is going to do To become a nurse The doors opened and we trampled in. We, the small fries of yesterday were the Freshmen of the year, very ambitious right from the start. Led by Bill Bannon, our president; Debbie Stevenson, Vice-President; Carole Staves, Secretary; and George Clark, Treasurer; we were in just about everything up to our necks. Our most ambitious gesture was entering the Christmas Decorations Contest. We started enthusiastically as soon as the rules would let us, manning the glue pots and paint brushes that we had scattered all over the halls. After the struggle the reward; but not for us. We didn’t even rate an honorable mention. We returned with new plans and our increased wisdom for our Sophomore year and elected Donnie Brown, Su Windsor, Claire Bianca, and Norman Garrelts for our officers. Startingoff with something real big we had a food sale. Its delicious success we owe to our mothers because most of the food was there due to their efforts. To prove we were learning we again attacked the decorating contest and won second prize for the beautiful job we did on the auditorium using Christmas in every land as our theme. Then there was our assembly. The one no one but us knows about because it never did quite make it to the stage. We had lots of fun rehearsing our Top Tunes (which it was to be) and we danced and sang pretty good (we thought). We had a round and square dance that year and it was a success too. Fall the next year we had that feeling all loyal Juniors have. We are much more capable than the Seniors. They, of course, seemed to disagree all year. Our officers were Bill Bannon, Debbie Stevenson, Claire Bianca and Larry Savard. We had been looking forward to this year for a long time because we would choose our class rings, and when they came we were all in a frenzy. They are beautiful though. This year our dance was not successful. We had a bit of bad luck when a forest fire broke out the day of the dance and all the boys went to fight it. Itching for something new we decided to have a penny carnival. Our booths and games brought in money fast that stormy night and anyone will tell you that our carnival was the biggest success that ever hit this school. Come Spring it was prom-time and co-operating with the Seniors for once the Serenade in Blue was a beautiful dance. Of course it drained us of our riches. Through the years we’ve been in many activities other than those of our class. The Spring Plays, JV and Varsity sports, cheer leading, band and all the others that have filled the years with excitement and fun — memories. We’ve come a long way and learned so very much. Our Alma Mater means more to us than we ever thought it could. As we prepare for life and go our separate ways, the class of ‘58 bids Tupper High a fond farewell. During the football season of 1957, the varsity football team was very inexperienced. Because of the inexperience, injuries and a squad of fifteen men, we had a gruelling season. The team went through the season without a win, as the last two games against Malone and Massena were forfeited. Even though we lost all of our games, the team is to be congratulated. Every man on the team worked hard and gave his all. Though we had a let down this year, we can expect a pretty good team in the next season as most of the boys are experienced, and we lost only four men by graduation. The varsity team was coached by Mr. Tice who took over the job as head coach after Mr. Perry had to give it up for a period of time due to illness. The following is the schedule that we played; Ogdensburg - here. Canton - away, Potsdam -here, Saranac - away, Goveneur - here, Malone and Massena were forfeited. SKIING GOLF KNEELING: Coach Perry. SECOND ROW: Leon Luman, Kenny LaFave, John North, Bill LeRoux, Jerry Stone, Bob Fromo-get, Richard Lemeiux, John Lake, Gary Davis, Steve Crary, Raymond Poirier. LAST ROW: Mr. McGinn. Coach; Curt Raymond, Manager; Mr. Quinn, Coach. VARSITY BASKETBALL It was a nip and tuck battle all the way for the Lumberjacks this year. We started the season pretty slowly with a loss to Canton and Potsdam, and one with Massena. However, we ended up with a good record of ten wins and six losses. This record and a chance in the semi-finals was attained in our last game of the season against Canton. Canton and Tupper were tied for fourth place, and each had one game left in the regular season — against each other. Both teams played beautiful ball, but Tupper proved to be the better team. In the semi-finals, the team played an excellent game, keeping ahead of Malone through most of the game. But in the final minutes of play, Malone dominated the ball and went on to win by a score of 45 to 43. Unfortunately, most of the first string were Seniors, so next year’s team will be green as far as Varsity ball is concerned. The Senior class wishes the Varsity team of 1958-59 the best of luck and that they have as successful a season as this year’s did. Congratulations to this year’s team and their fine manager Tom Nixon. VARSITY BASKETBALL JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Tuppers’ “Little Jacks” had a very Successful season this year with a fine record of 12 wins and 4 losses. They ended the regular season in a second place tie with Malone. The tie was played off at the Potsdam State Teachers College Gym. The “Little Jacks” led throughout most of the game until the final minute of play when a foul was called against Tupper. In the following seconds, Malone led by 3 points, and die game ended with Tupper on the short end by one point. The final score was 35 to 34. Next year the Junior Varsity team will be green. But there are a fine group of players in the eighth grade who, I’m sure, will give their all and have a fine season. The Senior class wishes the Junior Varsity team of 1958-59 the best of luck in their basketball season. KNEELING: L. Perry, Director of Athletics: F. Tice, Coach; D. Bigrow, Manager. STADNING: J. 'Planet128 958 Time goes by so swiftly, we realize that now, too, even though we’ve heard you say it hundreds of times. It seems like just last week that we were in grade school, coming home wild with the news of our pet shows, parties and friends we’d made that day. Never idle a minute from morning to bedtime. You must have wondered where our energy came from. So many tragic episodes we went through! For instance falling in the mud with a new coat on, or staying after school that first time when we ’’didn’t do a thing!” We couldn’t wait to reach home and tell you all about it. And you were always there ready to listen, to explain and to teach us as best you could. We’ve done so much together — the camping trip at the Fish Creek, fishing, hunting, boating, or our own camp back in the woods. Singing around the fire, toasting marshmallows, swimming, dreaming.. . . together. The Sunday afternoon rides, always an adventure because we never knew where we’d end up, at first Dad driving and later those exciting trips with us at the wheel. Church on Sunday morning, the proud feeling in our hearts when we take our places in the pew as a family. Evenings at home. Suppertime, a gabfest, talking over the day’s happenings, laughing, hearing about your good times, thinking how wonderful you are, how lucky we are. The sadder times when one of us was sick. When we had a real problem. The times when the whole world has looked like a black horror to us. Growing up. Learning, wondering, making decisions, preparing for life. Now the time we’ve dreamed of so often before is becoming a reality. We are graduating from high school. It is you, MOM AND DAD that we thank from the bottom of our hearts, not only for the material things you so willingly gave us, but for the unfailing love and understanding you have shown us through out our young lives.
