DEDICATION Miss Malakie's patience, humor, and guidance have aided us greatly in endeavoring to achieve our goals. For many years she has extended our boundaries of knowledge with dedicated skill and unlimited enthusiasm. In her teaching, there were never any obstacles great enough to obstruct the path of learning. It is with heartfelt appreciation that we, the Senior Class of 56, dedicate the Tuhisean to our friend and teacher. Miss Malakie. MR. JOSEPH F. DONOVAN MR. LAWRENCE P. QUINN Superintendent Principal We are deeply indebted to you, Mr. Donovan, our Superintendent, and to Mr. Quinn, our Principal, for your outstanding ability to guide Tupper Lake High School in progress. There was no problem too small to receive your much valued advice. The board of Education has been instrumental in the improvement of our school. Right now we are enlarging our gym and a new wing is being added. These additional rooms will be a great help to both the teachers and the students. These civic-minded citizens have donated much of their leisure time for the benefit of Tupper Lake High School. The members are: Ernest J. Wood, President; Thomas K. Somers, Clerk; Amos J. LaBarge, Arthur Cronin, and James Creighton, Trustees. BOARD of EDUCATION MR. ERNEST J. WOOD President MR. AMOS LA BARGE Trustee MR. JAMES CREIGHTON Trustee MR. ARTHUR CRONIN Trustee MR. It turned out to be a huge asset to our treasury. In October, the Seniors sold Christmas Cards in order to swell the Yearbook fund. A large sum was collected and a good profit received. The Seniors won the Christmas Decoration Contest again this year with a scene of the Nativity and a Christmasville in the Library. In December we also held a Semi-Formal Dance at the B.N. Sparks Memorial Hall. We decorated the hall beautifully and although we lost money on the dance we enjoyed it very much. During the month of February, the Senior Class helped the proprietor of the Doll Shop put on a Fashion Show. The show filled the auditorium and the proceeds went to the class treasury. In March we are going to put on a Minstrel Show for an assembly. The entire class will take part and we are sure it will be one of the better assemblies. Later on in the year we are going to have our Prom. We expect to cooperate with the Juniors and have only the one Prom again this year. If the success of the past activities is a sample of our work, the Prom will be a huge success. JOY BIANCA The very room 'cause she was in seemed warm from floor to ceilin’ . The day we tore the goalposts down. We will have these moments to remember. The quiet walks, the noisy fun. The ballroom prize we almost won. We will have these moments to remember. Though summer turns to winter. And the present disappears. The laughter we were glad to share Will echo through the years. When other nights and other days May find us gone our separate ways. Our advisors were Miss Malakie, Mr. Tooley and Mr. Graton. A large number of the class participated in the various clubs, the band, choir, and many sports. Progressing into our Sophomore year, we elected Ronald Laramee as President, Joy Bianca as Vice-President, Ann Van Vranken as Secretary and Gary Sabin as Treasurer. We were under the guidance of Mrs. For key, Mr. Poulin and Mr. Carter. The girls as well as the boys took part in extracurricular activities such as the G.A.A., Gymleaders, Dramatics Club, Student Council, and Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleading squads. Our Junior year was full of excitement and activity. We made an excellent start by electing four very capable officers. We chose Nelson Cassell for President, Pat Churco for Vice-President, Ann Van Vranken Secretary and Dick Lyons Treasurer. The first square dance of the year which was “The Kick-Off was put on by us and was a tremendous success. The Juniors held all the offices of the Student Council in 1954-55. The biggest event of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom which we named ‘‘The Stardust Ball.” We were under the excellent supervision of Mr. Bayer, Mrs. Austin and Mr. Baker. Our Senior History is recorded under the activities of the Senior Class. Twelve members were elected to cover the fields of editing, subscriptions, advertisements, literature, sports, and art. The staff with the co-operation of the class sold Christmas cards to help finance the book. At all staff meetings problems arose. Some of these were the selection of a cover, dedication, and photographer. During January regents week the staff started the actual work on the Tuhisean. All the members have worked hard and we hope the yearbook will be a publication to look back on in later years. We are proud of our book and hope you will like it. This organization was adopted in our school to recognize the students who have proved themselves outstanding in four fields; scholarship, leadership, character, and service. To belong, one must have maintained an average of at least 85“7o in his years in high school. Those who qualify in this respect are then rated by their teachers in the other three fields; leadership, character and service. The number of candidates is limited to lCflo of the Junior class, and 207o of the Senior class. Our initiation was held this year on February 24; six members of the Junior class were initiated and five members of the Senior class were initiated, to complete the Senior quota. Reverend Paul Bicknell was the guest speaker. DRAMATICS CLUB FIRST ROW, Left to Right: J. Bianca, G. Sabin, J. DiStefano, J. Bedore, A. Van Vranken, A. Forkey, A. AmorieU, L. Propp, J. Papin, A. Tupper fought hard their first game and the breaks went against them. We lost 7 to 6. In Massena playing hard Tupper began to get plagued with injuries and a stronger Massena club won out 20 to 0. For the next two games Tupper riding hard luck was unable to win or score. Their first win came with Potsdam when they won on their home field. The next week they went to Saranac and won 14 to 0. To end the season we played the powerful Gouverneur club, which won 32 to 6. However the season was not a failure because the boys never gave up. Mr. Perry and Mr. Tice did a fine job of coaching. They tried their best to train the players and the players gave their all. SEATED: F.Tice L. Perry STANDING: P. Quinn T. Six teams consisting of eight to ten men participated in a 15 game schedule carried on over a 10 week period. The playoffs were held and U.C.L.A. defeated Michigan and became champions. Mr. Quinn did a fine job as coach of the 6 man league. J.V. FOOTBALL Tupper Lake had its first J.V. team in three years. The team was coached by Mr. Bayer. Mr. Bayer had tough job on his hands to prepare these boys for further football on the Varsity. They had a disappointing schedule this year losing4 games and winning none. But the boys showed remarkable improvement in the final weeks of practice. FOOTBALL BASKETBALL KNEELING (Left to Right): A. A seel, J. Bedore, R. Boushie, S. Boushie, R. Russell, G. Sabin. STANDING: L. LaFave, R. North, B. Eggsware, T. Mercurio, C. Raymond, D. Lyons, L. Oldfield, Mr. Tice, Coach. This year Tupper Lake got off to a good start. The team was handicapped because they had no gym of their own in which to practice. Every night they had to travel to Paul Smiths, a distance of 28 miles to practice. After we had gotten off to our good start, we were knocked off by Odgensburg. Odgensburg was the only team to beat us twice in regular competition. We had a well rounded team consisting of eleven boys who did an excellent job. Tupper had only one veteran back from last year, Sherdan Boushie. The other four starters were on the J. V. team last year or the second team varsity. The varsity consisted of Gary Sabin, Ralph Russell, Curtis Raymond, Raymond Boushie and James Bedore. Our team showed lots of spirit in both winning and losing. When we went down to Canton for the Semi-Finals, we had high hopes of winning our game. We played Gouvemeur and lost to them in a 54-57 battle in overtime. The decision of that game was highly disputed but nothing could be done. Mr. Tice did a very good job of coaching for the conditions he had to cope with. We will always honor Mr. Tice and the players for doing such a wonderful job with such a handicap. This year the J.V. basketball team had a good season winning 10 out of 16 games. Although they did not get into the finals, they showed promise for future years. The J.V. Team had to start from scratch this year, since they lost all of their players except one veteran. The boys were handicapped not having any gym on which to practice in town. The trips were long but the boys played well during the season. Mr. Tice did a fine job of coaching the boys, and training them for more basketball next year. J.V. The captain and co-captain of the J. V. Squad are Carol Staves and Carol Savard respectively. Each Tuesday and Thursday night after school the Cheering Squads practice their cheers. Under Mrs. Gingold, our adviser, we have been successful with our food sale, and many students, girls and boys have learned how to dance. The girls and boys who tried out for the G. A. A. assembly not only got the experience of being on stage but also learned folk dancing, the rhumba, the jitterbug, the waltz, the Charleston and some mixer dances. Mrs. Gingold has also taught very interesting games which have livened up many parties.
