SENIOR CLASS HISTORY l Q, v xx N 'O . . . X Ng As Tuppy unwinds the scroll containing X the 1949 class history, he chuckles to himself A 1 X . . . . . N : at the past antics of these dignified seniors. K .. X Q He discovers that- In the privacy of Miss Verda's playhouse, Bobby Prather gave Gene Still Kirk her first real kiss. YJ hx 1 Rl At the same time Norman Bennett's favo- X I.-f-' rite diversion was dancing Ten Little Indians round 'n round the piano. Two musicals stand out in Primary School memories: The third grade extravaganza included many flowers and birds, among whom were Evelyn Newman, a calla lily, and Davis Earl Nash, a robing the second production was Showboat with dancing stars Mary Ann Smith and Doris Eason. Those horrible fourth grade arithmetic drills made Jimmy Simms shudder at the very mention of math, and no one could forget the fifth grade picnics on hospital hill, especially the one when the mules chased everybody up into trees. The class's first attempt at journalism resulted in The Seventh Grade Times spiced with Martha McGaughy's poetry such as: In the hot summer time What keeps us on the job? Why, the refreshing romance Of Shelia and Bob! The ninth grade found this illustrious class, struggling with their first taste of la- boratory science and feeling like first-class plutocrats at being the oldest and most import- ant people in the junior High building. This superiority was shattered when they entered the Senior High School as lowly sophomores, creeping into the study hall, frightened by the stares of those oh-so-old upperclassmen. One tenth grader, however, more daring than the rest, repeatedly made off with Mrs. Burney's prized possession-the famous, tinkling bell. And who was this cour- ageous fellow ?--Earl Moody!

Many sacrifices were made for the pleasure of the Seniors: Jerry Biggers became hoarse screaming Where's Laurie? g Mary Armstrong penned banquet fortunes in her sleepg Allen Stewart lost face with the reading of the prophecy. September, 1948, and the last lap of the school journey began. These Seniors were trying hard to make this, their last year, the best. Howard Stephens and his football playing brought glory to T. H. S.g the HI-TIMES with Nona Ewing as Editor moved into the ranks of a first-class newspaperg those long-awaited exemptions finally rolled around-at least to a lucky few. The last days in Tupelo High were filled with memorable events. Tonight We Dance, the Senior play, was an entertainment long to be remembered by both the actors and the audience. Then in rapid succession came the baccalaureate sermon and the final achievement- graduation. To the familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstancen the class of 1949, diplomas clutched tightly in their hands, moved slowly from the auditorium, leaving behind them twelve happy years.
