Tumwater's DECA organiza- tion, a member of the Distributive Education Clubs of America, raised money for a host of differ- ent causes and participated in DECA competitions. The 39 THS members raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation by putting collection cans in local stores and restaurants and raised money for their own group by op- erating the Christmas gift wrap- ping booth at Capital Mall and selling Valentine's cards and bal- loons. Besides raising money, DECA members learn about busi- ness and merchandising. The DECA competitions the club members participated in were both written and performance events. Club members advanced to state and regional competi- tions after placing in the local events. Caramba Club Promotes International Understanding mnwakw a p ll- x 1 X - 'Caramba Club's pur- E pose was to promote in- ternational understand- ing through the use of the , Spanish language, stat- 9 ed Mrs. Lhonda Backman, Caramba advisor. Meet- ings were held monthly at different members' houses where the group spent the evening con- versing in Spanish. The club sponsored a Christ- mas party for all foreign language students and put on a dance in the spring. Mrs. Backman commented on how much the two Mexican exchange students, Ja- vier Gallegos and Maria Tellez, had enriched the year.
