H. S. for five years. In that period he has the enviable record of 42 wins and 10 losses. His teams have won the District Championship three years in succession. Coach Brown claims more friends in Tulia High School than any one con- nected with the school. JOE BRADLEY: Senior letterman and squad man of the previous year. Joe always gave his best and was an inspiration to his teammates. JIMMY McCASLAND: Three year letterman playing at end and halfback. Jim was a fighter from the ground up and led the 1938 Hornets to their third championship as co-captain. SAM HARRIS: Four year letterman and co-captain of the 1938 Champs. Sam never gave up despite the score or odds. He was a great defensive as well as offensive player. He played on the three championship teams. PALTL COOK: Junior three letterman and triple threat back. Paul promises to go down as the only player Tulia has ever had to play on four championship teams. EARL COX: Freshman '38 letterman. Earl was a hard driver and gained power as the season wore on. He will be working hard for another season next year. CLYDE JAMES: Assistant Hornet Coach. Coach drives the hoys but gets results. His efficient line saved the day many times in his three years at Tulia. Crow Eniinitt C. Fletcher W. E. Fletcher Hall H. Burgess B. Burgess H. C. CROW: Junior letterman. “Tiny” gave all he had ami hail the reputation of being the biggest little player on the field. JOHN EMMITT: Squad man two years. John never missed a practice period and helped make the Hornets what they were by his constant efforts. His spirit was never dimmed by any loss. CHARLES FLETCHER: Sophomore letterman. Charles worked hard and his drive and spirit were valuable in winning the pennant. Charles played at center and will be with us two more years. WALTER EARL FLETCHER: Senior letterman. Walter held down the left wing position and few are the times that opponents passed his way. His pleasing personality and everlasting smile made him a favorite among his team mates. JACK HALL: Sophomore squad man. Jack is a fiery guard and his desire to win will make him a regular in the future. HfTWARD BURGESS: Freshman squad man. Howard will see much service in the future due to his spirit and willingness to learn. BUELL BURGESS: Squad man. Although small, Buell had the fire which kept the regulars working for their positions. Kirkpatrick Mayo Hulsey McDonald Owens Parker Sharrock STEWART KIRKPATRICK: J unior letterman. Stewart playing his first year turned in a classy season and much is expected of him in the future. His blocking and tackling were filled with his never dying spirit. WATT MAYO: Junior letterman. Watt is a smart hack and fighter from the ground up. He played brilliant hall and will have his best season next year. His friendly smile and fighting heart will long he remembered by Tulia students. L. G. McDONALD: Senior letterman. “Mac” was a tough opponent from his guard position. He has lettered twro years and has helped bring two pennants to T. H. S. RALPH OWENS: Senior letterman. Ralph ended his career on the Hornets in a blaze of «lory. He was a mainstay in the Hornets attack and cannot be praised too highly as a student and player of the game. WALKER PARKER: Junior squadman. Walker played his end well, hut lack of experience made him second choice. He will make it hard for the boys another season. STEVE SHARROCK: Sophomore letterman. Big Steve was lacking in experience, but made up for it in constant practice and spirit. Steve will be a whale of a tackle another year and we expect much of him. Stoltenberg Turner Vaughn Wheeler Wiman HAROLD STOLTENBERG: Sophomore squad man. Harold was a constant threat to other hacks on the squad and made the team much better by his untiring efforts. He will have his day next year and we are hoping it will be a big one. ELWOOD TURNER: Junior letterman. Elwood is a hard driver and lover of the game. As a line backer he is plenty tough. T. H. S. will he watching him next year when he resumes his dashes up and down the gridiron. ALBERT VAUGHN: Senior letterman. Albert gave T. H. S. all he had and was one of the main cogs in the Hornet pennant drive. MAX WHEELER: Junior letterman. “As tough as they make ’em,” is what they say about this tackle. His two hundred pounds of brawn has stopped many an opponent for a loss. We will be seeing him next fall. PAT WIMAN: Junior letterman. Although lacking in experience, Pat's Irish blood made him a regular end. He is a hard driver and pass snatcher of the finest quality. His future looks brilliant. Cook; Crocker; Harris; Wheeler; Man gum; Wiraan; McCasland; Mayo; Cobh; Crow; Hall; Tucker; Knowles; Brown Tulia’s 1939 basketball season was as successful as might be expected under the circumstances. Getting off to a late start due to a long football season. Coach Brown found only two 1938 lettermen in harness and only a handful of aspirants from which to mould a team. Sickness and injuries handicapped the Hornets throughout the 1939 campaign and Paul Cook was the only regular who started the season and finished it in good shape. Prospects for 1940 are more promising with Cook, Wheeler, Turner, Mayo, Sims, Wiman, Harris, Stol- tenberg. Crow, and a number of junior recruits moving up to fill in the vacancies. Most of these boys will be seniors next year and are looking forward to a great season. Clubs OFFICERS I’.' - I Dorothy Dallas Vice President Viola Seale Secv-Treas. Don't you care anything about the law’? Helen C.: Why, officer, how can I tell yet? I’ve only just met you. • • Office Girl: Your little girl wants to kiss you over the phone. Mr. Turney: (Very busy) Take the message—I'll get it from you later. Elw'ood: This liniment makes my arm smart. Coach Brow’n: Why not rub some on your head? Mrs. Dougal: What do you think of Kreisler? Tiny Crow: Great!! Splendid! Swrell pickup, a lot of pep. and twenty miles on a gallon. Joe Rogers: I've an invention at last that wdll mean a fortune! Mr. Baggarly: What is it this time? Joe: Why, it's an extra key for a typewriter. When you don’t know’ how to spell a w’ord you hit that key, and it makes a blur that might be an “e”, an “a”, or almost anything else you like. Barber: (To V. R.) What'll you have, a haircut or just the oil changed? Maxine Wilkerson (In shorthand class) : Now, Mr. Baggarly, what did vou sav between “Dear Sir” and “Yours truly?” • « Jimmy Me: May I have the last dance with you? Elouise: You’ve had it. Miss Bowman was trying to impress the class with the danger of hail habits. “What is it,” she asked, “that wTe find so easy to get into and so hard to get out of?” “Bed,'' came the answer from Sant. “Ralph, what made you quit going with Hazel B?” “Well, you see she has red hair and green eyes, and when I started to kiss her I never knew w’hether to stop or go ahead.” ACTIVI 1ZJu[ia cJj-icjfi. cScfioot iSanci Raymond E.
