, 9 1 ' wfn V14 9....t abbot ef When the white men came to this country, they found the Indians living in a culture in which there were no taxes, no politicians, no soap operas, and the women did all the work. For over 300 years the white men have been trying to improve on that. Seriously though, the Indians had acquired a great deal of wisdom which could have profited the white man if he had followed some of their good examples. The chief attracted attention to himself through acts of bravery, integrity, and even denial of personal comforts. Often he would go alone into the deep forest to fast for days to please the Gods and bring relief to his people who might be suffering from disease or star- vation. Also, the chief did not attract the envy of his warriors through accumulation in his own wigwam of trophies of the hunt or chase. He desired the respect of his warriors for his personal qualities rather than the admiration of his wealth.
