N Dedication RICHARD FLISS We, Seniors of 1959, wish to dedicate the Chieftainto Mr. Richard Fliss in appreciation for the time and effort he has spent with us during our high school career. Mr. Fliss, who has been at Tulare since 1954, has been our class advisor for our Sophomore and Senior years. He has also been the paper and annual staff instructor since coming to Tulare. The publishing of the school paper consists of soliciting ads and subscriptions, gathering material and writing newsworthy articles. They were Robert Barness, Marvin Beckler, Gary Belknap, Helen Sue Blume, Helen Brugger, Illa Buckendahl, Rose Marie Dilley, Thomas Dulany, Marjorie Fountain, Clifford Frankenstein, Gary Harmening, Dayton Kloss, Donald Price, Dean Tipton, and Geneva Tomsha. The first highlight of the Freshman year was our initiation in which we honored the upperclassmen with a program and they returned the honor with a party that evening. Tom, Dayton, Gary B. , Dean, Marvin, Robert, and Donald parti- cipated in boys physical education. Football was inaugurated this year. Clifford was student manager. Rose Marie, Illa, Helen Sue, Helen, and Marjorie participated in girls physical education. Rose Marie transferred to Bonilla between semesters. Geneva, Marjorie, Thomas, Clifford, and Marvin participated in band. Geneva was soloist in band. Clifford, Helen Sue, Illa, Gary B. , Rose Marie, Helen, and Geneva took part in Declam. All the boys participated in "T" Club. Geneva, Gary Lee, Marjorie, Thomas, Illa, Donald, and Dayton participated in chorus. Clifford was chosen class president. Helen Sue was an attendant to the Princess and Dayton was Prince. We were guests at the Junior-Senior Prom. We ended our Freshman year with a picnic at Ruskin Park. Out of 15 freshmen 14 returned for the Sophomore year. Dean Tipton transferred to Bonilla the second six weeks, leaving 13.sophomores, The same girls participated in girls physical education and the same boys participated in boys physical education. Clifford was student manager. The boys also took active part in the "T" Club. The band students remained the same. Gary Lee, Geneva, Helen Sue, Helen, Illa, Tom, and Clifford took Declam. The school year was closed by the Tulare High School having their picnic at the Tulare School Gym. The Junior year all 13 of the sophomores returned. Helen Sue was chosen cheerleader. Helen Sue, Geneva, Gary Lee, Donald, Marvin, Helen, and Marjorie participated in chorus. The same students took part in band and declam. The Junior play, which was presented on March 4th, was a huge success. The name of our play was, HMOONSHINE AND HONEYSUCKLE. " Marvin, Gary Lee, Dayton, Tom, Robert, Donald, and Clifford were members of the F. F. A. Tom was selected as our Boys' State Delegate. Illa was chosen the Girls' State Delegate. Torn, Dayton, Donald, and Marvin took part in boys physical education. Clifford was student manager. Our hearts were filled with sadness at the loss of a fellow classmate, Gary Belknap, who passed away on November 6, 1957 The Juniors worked hard to provide a nice banquet for the Seniors. The theme was "Tropicana" with Al Better's Orchestra providing the dance music. The Junior year closed with a picnic at Cottonwood Lake. The entire class returned for the Senior year making twelve seniors. Tom, Dayton, Robert, Marvin, and Donald participated in boys physical education. Helen, Illa, Helen Sue, and Marjorie participated in girls physical education. All the boys participated in "T" Club. Clifford was student manager for boys physical education. Geneva made All State Band. Helen Sue was accompanist. Geneva was a member of the sextet. Donald was a member of the octet. Helen, Helen Sue, Marvin, Donald, Geneva, and Marjorie were members of chorus. Illa was chosen F. H. A. Secretary and Helen, Marjorie, and Geneva were members of the F. H. A. Dayton and Robert were F. F. A. officers. One of the highlights of our Senior year was Helen Sue being chosen queen and Dayton being chosen king of our Sweetheart Ball. Robert, Tom, and Illa were attendants. Helen Sue, Thomas, Robert, Geneva, Illa, Helen, Gary Lee, and Clifford took part in declam. Illa was selected Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. Geneva was our DAR Candidate. The Seniors presented their play, "FAITH, HOPE AND FLARITY" by Jan Tobias, which was a big success. On May 2, the Juniors gave a very beautiful banquet and prom in our honor. Baccalaureate was held on Sunday, May 10, in the All Purpose Room, and Commencement was held on Wednesday, May 13.
