Captain Thomas B. Russell, Jr. attended the Naval Aviation Cadet Program QV-5y in 1943, and was commissioned an Ensign in 1945. He served as an aviator with VF-SA and VF-72 before returning to school at Iowa State College. During the Korean con- flict he served withcomposifte Squadron ELEVEN engaged in combat operations against North Korea. After completing General Line School in 1953 Captain Russell became a flight in- structor at Whiting Field, Pensacola, Florida. Later assignments included billets in USS SIBONEY, FAUTULANT DET B, VF-21 and duty with the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, D,C., after Armed Forces Staff College. Captain Russell returned to the fleet in 1962 to serve as executive officer and then Com- manding officer of Attack Squadron ONE FIFTY FIVE, He later commanded Attack Carrier Air Wing 14 engaged in combat operations in South East Asia. In 1966 he returned to Washington to duty with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and to obtain a degree of Bachelor of Science in political Science at George Washington University, prior to reporting aboard TULARE. Captain RUSSELL is married to the former Lee Bleir of Lafayette, Rhode Island. They have three children.

Naval Academy in June of 1945. This was followed by Sub- marine school after which he served in successive junior officer billets in the USS BANG QSS 3855, USS SEA OWN QSS 4055 and USS TORO QSS 4225. After attending the U,S. Naval post graduate school he received a degree of Master of Bioradiology in June 1954, and later went on to serve in the USS PIPER QSS 4095 and later to command the USS SARDA QSS4885 and the high speed research sub- marine USS ALBACORE CAGS 5695. Subsequent billets have in- cluded assignments to the Naval Long Range Studies Project, staff of Commander Task fGrou.p ALFA QCommander Carrier Div- ision SIXTEEN5 and Chief Staff Officer on the staff of Commander Submarine Five. in San Diego. Prior to coming to TULARE, Captain Thompson served for one year as Commander Submarine Division THIRTY-TWO, home ported in San Diego. He is married to the former Janice Misell of Bala-Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. The Thompsons have four sons and three daughters and reside in San Diego.
