-1 iz.. .- 2 asketball Throughout our stay in WestPac sports ac- tivities played an important role in occupying our time and cementing good relations during our Good Will tour of Iapan. The ship's basket- ball team compiled an impressive record of 8 wins and 2 defeats against other ship's teams and Iapanese teams. Thanks to number four hold the Tulare's team had their own basket- ball court wherein many practice sessions were held. Coach Young gave the team many point- ers and Cook, Big Mac and Carmichael led the team in scoring. The Tulare never formally organized a boxing team but when the Alamo asked Whe- ther We cared to participate in a boxing smoker they were going to hold on the night of the l5th of lanuary l96O We gladly ac- cepted and sent three eager young lads to represent the ship. ln the first match, l-lerrera Won a unanimous decision as he outclassed and outboxed his opponent. ln the next fight in which a Tulare man participated, Lan- caster floored his opponent twice and gen- erally knocked him around the ring. Finally, Big McClure fought a highly regarded man from the Alamo but he jabbed him into sub- mission. ln Winning this fight, McClure re- ceived the best boxer of the evening award. Herrera and Lancaster also received trophies for their gallant efforts. Thus ended a very bright night in the short life of the Tulare's boxing team. lit 2 .
