2 r 4 11 ,ff V Wi' '- t 4 , 122135: After havina concluded our Good Will tour, we visited Yolcosuka once aaain and then Subic Bay in the Philip- pines for one day and finally We ar- rived in Hona Kona on the 30th oi lan- uary 1960. Once ashore in l-long Kona, nearly everyone made a bee line tor the various recommended tailor shops to purchase clothina. Such other items as jewelry, shoes and linens also tempted our eyes but for some ot us our wallets were empty before we had started. Tiaer Balm Gardens added color and variety to our visit to l-lona Kona and good old San Miquel was ever present to quench our thirst. The Tulare lett Hona Kona on the 4th oi February and headed for our home ot Yokosuka. l-lere We loaded over 200 Marines and their aear and prepared to itakedfthem to Naha, Okinawa Where We arrived on the lZth of February. - From Naha, the Tulare proceeded to Su- bic Bay for two Weeks upkeep and avail- ability. Once aaain we loaded on board MAG ll., and its equipment and departed Subic on the lst of March for Kaohsiung, Taiwan where We unloaded MAG ll. Upon leavinq Kaohsiung onthe 6th We headed for Okinawa to commence loading opera- tions for the amphibious exercise Blue Star. After spendina ten days in Buckner Bay and vicinity the Tulare sortied from there in company with the Princeton CLPI-l-55 and LSD's Alamo' and Point Defiance. This :Blue operation provided the Tulare with her first opportunity to steam in company at speeds over 20 knots. The rehearsal went off rather smoothly but on D-Day mother nature was not with us as hiah Winds and heavy Winds delayed D-Day one day. D-Day was maxed with the report that 5 Marines missina and afloat at sea in a rubber life raft. Thence, the Tulare started a .Q clay search and rescue effort along With many other ships which was ended when the Marines were located on an island off the coast of Taiwan. ' A '9 by J
