1-' SINGAPORE ...some 200 miles north of the Equator mixes together Malayans, Chinese, Indians, Arabs and Europeans in an exotic blend of colors, foods, smells, customs and even buildings that has been madefamous in the novels of Conrad and Kipling. Sir Stamford Raffles founded this colony for Britain in 1819, and his name is everywhere. We 4 were at home with the British right away, and ashore made our headquarters the swimming pool of the excellent Britannica Club for Servicemen. A hundred years ago a British naturalist wrote that in Singapore, there were always a few tigers roaming about and they killed, on the average, a man every day. Looks like 'Gator Sam found one. The best time was aboard ship the day we treated two hundred underprivileged children to ice cream, cake and movies.
