JAPAN WN N 5 f QQ -15 Q, Q15 f 2 , 5 IQ Q 5 f -2 QWQQL 0' Z 3? l L I f , Nbqfp . . . became an overseas home to us and as the weeks passed, the forts of Yokosuka Harbor began to seem as familiar as Point Loma Light. Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Shimoda, Sasebo, Nagasaki, Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, Shimonoseki Straits and the Inland Sea took on life and color for us. How strange it all was at first, and how quickly the oriental ways seemed natural-well, ALMOST natural. We went on sightseeing tours in every port, and were always in the Navy Exchanges or on thieves' alley trying to fill the long shopping lists for folks back home. Asahi Beer turned out to be pretty good, and the girl-sans had a winsome way that warmed a sailor's heart, ne? Iapan was clean, and its people indus- trious and friendly. Many a man will long remem- ber the gaudy lights of Yokosuka, the smell of SUKI- YAKI and TEMPURA simmering in a pan, the wail of a I apanese phonograph record f She ain't got no yo-yo! l, the misspelled English signs, like GET HOT BASS HERE, and cabaret come-ons like WARM BEER, BAD FOOD AND UGLY GIRLS!

SHIMGDA . . .is a quiet Iapanese fishing village whose importance to us lay in the pages of history dated April, 1854. For in that month and year Commodore Matthew Perry negotiated a treaty with the war lords that led directly to the opening of feudal Iapan to the modern world. His squadron of coal-burning Amer- ican ships so impressed the Iapanese that they named the ileet in their harbor black ships of evil mien. TULARE called at Shim- oda in the middle of May, 103 years later, to take part with USS WORCESTER in the pop- ular Black Ship Festival commemorating Perry's historic visit. We furnished a platoon of sailors for a parade through town, held general visiting on board ship. and watched the WORCESTER's ball team get theirs from the Shimoda Giants. Once again the U. S. Navy had come to sleepy Shimoda.
