Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Shimoda, Sasebo, Nagasaki, Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, Shimonoseki Straits and the Inland Sea took on life and color for us. How strange it all was at first, and how quickly the oriental ways seemed natural-well, ALMOST natural. We went on sightseeing tours in every port, and were always in the Navy Exchanges or on thieves' alley trying to fill the long shopping lists for folks back home. Asahi Beer turned out to be pretty good, and the girl-sans had a winsome way that warmed a sailor's heart, ne? Iapan was clean, and its people indus- trious and friendly. Many a man will long remem- ber the gaudy lights of Yokosuka, the smell of SUKI- YAKI and TEMPURA simmering in a pan, the wail of a I apanese phonograph record f She ain't got no yo-yo! l, the misspelled English signs, like GET HOT BASS HERE, and cabaret come-ons like WARM BEER, BAD FOOD AND UGLY GIRLS!
