TULARE, a newcomer to the Am- phibious Force, Pacific Fleet, is the Navy s biggest and fastest Attack Cargo Ship. An Attack Cargo Ship carries combat cargo of all kinds to assist ground forces in amphibi- ous invasions once troops have landed on enemy beaches. . TULARE was converted from her Marin- er-Class merchant hull to a Navy ship by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in San Francisco. Cn lanuary twelfth, l956, she was commissioned, and Captain Donald W. Todd, USN., commanded her early days. Cn September tenth, l956, Captain Colin l. Mackenzie, U.S.N., relieved Cap- tain Todd and remained skipper until Sep- tember sixteenth, l957, when Captain Earl R. Crawford, USN., relieved him of com- mand in Pearl l-larbor and brought the ship back along the last leg of her Western Pa- cific cruise. TULARE is a modern ship. We have a large helicopter platform on our fantail to off-load cargo urgently needed Gt the beaches. Cur main battery consists of twenty-seven amphibious landing craft, but we also have six twin 3 f5O automatic mounts and six twin 20 mm mounts. Guy holds are large, and three of the booms on the guadrupod masts are capable of lift- ing loads in excess of GO tons. Cur speed is greater than 22 knots. Length: 564 feet, Beam: 76 feet. Registered tonnage: l8,0UU, Our living compartments are large and comfortable. The food is wonderful-as the dedication of this cruise book proves! TULARE is proud to be named after Tulare County, in southern California. . But a ship is more than the steel hull and fittings which make up her physical ap- pearance. A ship will always be a reflec- tion of her commanding officer - the old man-and the officers and crew who man her. Life aboard a Navy ship is the military life of these men as they work together, and rest, and train, and face the sea. Cn the next few pages we would like you to meet the men who give life to our ship. ,. .,.-Qf- A f-f. yr 't B .Tl X 5 224049 ' I algywa-I ' lv 'ns M , ms, ,,,.,m, .,,, .IA M W , 7 Q f A Message from Captain Mackenzie ' -I ' 'Q 74 .NQ , f V X f X 1 ff f f X f f f f X ffm-gf f ' y my , ff X f f,xJ ., ,fg i gfy, , f ,, As this memorable cruise to the Western Pacific nears its end and We look back over the past eight months since leaving San Diego in February, all of us cannot but feel a sense do ship. l6 September l957 Pearl Harbor, T. Mi' '47 r NAGASAKI SHIMGDA . . .is a quiet Iapanese fishing village whose importance to us lay in the pages of history dated April, 1854. For in that month and year Commodore Matthew Perry negotiated a treaty with the war lords that led directly to the opening of feudal Iapan to the modern world. His squadron of coal-burning Amer- ican ships so impressed the Iapanese that they named the ileet in their harbor black ships of evil mien. TULARE called at Shim- oda in the middle of May, 103 years later, to take part with USS WORCESTER in the pop- ular Black Ship Festival commemorating Perry's historic visit. We furnished a platoon of sailors for a parade through town, held general visiting on board ship. and watched the WORCESTER's ball team get theirs from the Shimoda Giants. Once again the U. S. Navy had come to sleepy Shimoda. 71 V1 ,ali i A 1 I 1 2: Am v fl' vga -Ag 4 M. 5 W 3 gf ? f 11 ' H I CV f 7 W QQ , f KW gf f R99 X f f f if f ' W ,MW W' V ad? ,..k M-W I lf, an f M 5 L, The AMPHIBS A cruise is by no means all play, and we hadn't been in I apan more than a few days before we got underway for operation BEACON HILL, involving more than one hundred ships and many thousands of men. We loaded combat cargo at Okinawa and trained our boat crews at White Beach in preparation for the biggest amphibious landing in the Pacific since World War II. BEACON HILL, a rugged training exercise, was conducted at Dingalan Bay, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. TULARE carried elements of the 3rd Marine Division, and we baked 'em a cake. We worked hard again during operation RED CROSS, at Chigasaki, lapan, where we tested procedures to be used in evacuat- ing casualties from a beach. Our hatch crews, boat crews, and helicopter deck per- sonnel broke all records during this one. Near the end of our cruise we went to Pusan, Korea, to plan operation OSDEX in which TULARE was the senior participating unit. When we made the landing in August at Ulsan-Man with our strange cargo of -1 dia., gg. -. S vehicles, lime, ink and soap, we were test- ing the feasibility of off-loading cargo across a beach-assuming that normal port facilities were not available. The hands on deck worked with safety . . . and set better and better records at the hatches. The wings of our bridge sported the Assault Boat Insigne: we knew we were good. Amphibious exercises mean a lot of things: steaming sometimes for many days to an operating area, anchoring before dawn, and off-loading the boats tPage 437. Then there's the work at the hatches, booms lifting cargo out of the holds, swinging it across the decks and into the boats along- side: troops scrambling down- debarkation nets: casualties coming aboard at the litter hoists, and boats circling alert to calls for more and more cargo tpage 443. During every operation there comes a break, time for a rest, during which the boats can be tied up alongside, repair gangs can re- place bent screws and work on the en- gines, and weary men may settle down to some hot chow Cpage 455. An amphibious operation means manning the guns at gen- eral quarters, communicating with other ships, and standing taut engine room and C.I.C. watches tpages 46 and 47l. But there is more to the operating sched- ule of a ship assigned to WESTPAC than the work at the beachheads. The ship fuels at sea, conducts transfer of personnel and freight by highline, fires gunnery exercises flike the one that got the E l, holds engi- neering drills and full power runs, and trains her communicators and Combat Information Center by steaming in for- mation and operating with aircraft and submarines. The sailor is busy at sea, learning his ship and training to fight. We may have been a little green when We left San Diego. We were rough and tough by the time we got back. Sir Stamford Raffles founded this colony for Britain in 1819, and his name is everywhere. We 4 were at home with the British right away, and ashore made our headquarters the swimming pool of the excellent Britannica Club for Servicemen. A hundred years ago a British naturalist wrote that in Singapore, there were always a few tigers roaming about and they killed, on the average, a man every day. Looks like 'Gator Sam found one. The best time was aboard ship the day we treated two hundred underprivileged children to ice cream, cake and movies. Accordingly, we set watches on the helicopter deck each day, while in these waters, to catch one of the creatures. We picked our newest men because their eyes were keenest. One night, iust after the watch had secured without seeing anything out of the ordinary, an old salt happened to be near the box that had been rigged as a trap when a Sea Bat loomed out of the dark and flew into it. The lid was slammed, and we had made our catch. The next night our quarry was put on display and a lot of the new hands came up for a look, the older ones having seen a Sea Bat on other cruises. These greener men, bending over for close study oi the animal, got a bat where they least expected it from the same old salt who was standing nearby.
