A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The success and perhaps the existence of political liberty depends upon the courage and personal responsibil- ity of the average citizen. On the campus of Tuiane it is our duty to nnaintain an intense culture of these qualities and make instinctive their practice and philosophy. Each one of us, whether in uniform, essential occupation, during wartime or during peacetime, must discharge obligations correlative to the privileges of democratic citizenship. The war work Tuiane can do and has undertaken is more than may be listed here, but her founders could take pride in her accomplishments and her sons find inspiration to carry on. Tulane ' s greatest obligation, however, made doubly imperative today, will always be to prepare students for broad understanding and de- voted citizenship. The strength of our foes lies in their love of country to a degree seldom equalled. We who fight for our country and even for others too must emulate their devotion and exceed their sacrifice. But we can have no education for civilians and education for militia — each citizen must be a good soldier, each soldier an intelligent citizen. For what each of us receives from democracy we must be prepared to help in the defense of it. As this yearbook brings back memories of these extraordinary campus days, I hope it will renew and nourish your determination to jive intelligently and courageously in the world which you shall help to make free.
