3 F OM jyt PI ESIDENT This year at Tulane has seen notable progress in intellectual activities. We have now a magnificent new library building, with the finest of modern equipment well designed for library use. The intellectual stimulus this has given both faculty and students is apparent. The gift of and the completion of the Thomas F. Cun- ningham Memorial Observatory will provide the stimulus to awaken the curiosity of many along new lines of thought and investigation, since the opportunity is thus provided for work in astronomy. The increased emphasis on social responsibilities in business administration and the need for professional training for executive positions has tried the facilities of the College of Commerce, but its needs have been fulfilled through the gift of the Norman Mayer Memorial Building, which has been started this year. The completion of the Student Center Building, a gift of the alumni which it has been your privilege to enjoy during your university days, has made possible a better Student Activity program. There must be an attempt at all times to correlate such activities with the broad educational program of the University, rather than to treat these activities as separate entitles apart from the whole. Some of the essentials of a successful college career are an earnest, serious- minded devotion to curricular pursuits, an identification with con- structive extra-curricular campus forces, the development of wide and varied interests, the formation of lasting friendships, and the display of a friendly cooperative spirit In all campus relationship. Such activity is worth the effort. In that way only can you fully take advantage of the opportunity which is yours In Tulane today. RUFUS C. HARRIS
