ical School; Mr. Thomas Craven, famous art critic and lecturer; and Dr. Brant V. B. Dixon, president emeritus of Newcomb. The semi-centennial com- mittee, adeptly supervised by Miss Anna E. Many, provided many other delightful festivities, among which were a buffet luncheon in honor of the pro- fessors emeriti of Newcomb College and a half- hour program over radio station WSMB. On the College of Law were focused the eyes of the legal profession when it launched the Tulane Livingston Centennial, October 27-3 I , commemo- rating the 1 00th year since the death of Edward Livingston. Mr. Livingston, legal scholar, writer and statesman, was responsible for Louisiana ' s mainte- nance of her Civil Code. Dean Emeritus Roscoe Pound of the Harvard Law School spoke on each of the four evening programs, October 27-30, in Dixon hiall. The audience marveled at his rare memory, inasmuch as his delivery was complete without the use of notes. hHis lectures were of such a nature as to be intelligible and extremely inter- esting to the many non-legal members of his audi- ence. Another tribute to the prominence of Tulane University ' s College of Law and to Its worthy com- memoration was the presence of Associate Justice FHenry T. Lummus of the Supreme Court of Mas- sachusetts. Justice Lummus spoke on two occasions, the morning of October 31 and the same night at JAMES MARSHALL ROBERT B.E. ' 11 I ANNA ESTELLE MANY M.A. Counselor to Women, Newconnb College In its 1936-1937 session, Tuiane University com- pleted another memorable chapter In Its enviable history. During the 103 years of Its existence, Tu- iane has ascended to the pinnacle of educational institutions in this country. Under the efficient direction of the newly ap- pointed Acting President, Robert L. Menuet, not only were 39 new members admitted to the faculty and the enrollment increased by 10 per cent, but the physical plant of the University has been im- mensely improved. An academic dormitory at the rear of the campus has been remodeled Into the new Social Science Building which houses the School of Social Work and the departments of economics, history, journalism, political science, psychology and sociology. The facilities of the College of Law have been expanded In Dinwiddle Hall, formerly the new Science Building, as have those of the Depart- ments of Geology and of Botany and Zoology. The 1936-1937 session has marked the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the H. Sophie Newcomb College of Tuiane University. Wednesday, Decem- ber 16, 1936 was celebrated as memorial day for Harriott Sophie Newcomb, daughter of the founder. The evening of October 30, the College of Law awarded honorary doctorates to Dr. Pound, Associate Justice Lummus and Ralph J. Schwarz, a prominent local attorney. Not only did the commemoration afford the stu- dents of the University an excellent opportunity to reflect upon the immortal words of Edward Living- ston, but also to give ear to the greatest legal genius of modern times — Dr. Pound. Another noteworthy advancement during the 1936-1937 session was the enlargement and in- creased repertoire of the three main musical or- ganizations of the University — The Tulane Band, The Tulane Glee Club, and The Newcomb Glee Club, each of which is under the able direction of May- nard Klein. The Tulane Band, having more than doubled itself in size, now consists of 92 newly uni- formed men. The Tulane Glee Club, possessing a repertoire which would permit it to sing a capelia choral music one evening and negro spirituals the next, has evolved into an organization of 60 highly trained male voices. The Newcomb Glee Club has more than upheld the worthy precedent which it has set during the many years of its existence. Each of these organizations has performed a complete schedule of concerts and has been heard several times over the various radio stations of New Or- eans.
