Text from Pages 1 - 296 of the 1978 volume:

TUFTS UNIVERSITY 1974-1978 2 The class of 1978 arrived in Medford two days before Labor Day in 1974, not one month after the resignation of Richard Nixon. Signs of the turmoil from previous years were evident in the dress of upperclassmen, the conversations in dorms, and the attitudes of all. 3 . • - 7 ' - A ' y • V. ysSff ! v . You were the last freshmen to meet Jumbo and the first seniors to participate in the new courses in decision¬ making, international relations, and nutrition, which are the first fruits of our re-thinking of the structure of un¬ dergraduate education. Far from living in the traditional ivory tower these last four years, you faced two disastrous fires in Barnum and Curtis with courage and presence of mind and the resulting inconveniences with equanimity. This year, you welcomed our unexpectedly large freshman class with friendship and accepted the crowding and, for some of you, exile to the Cambridge Common with good humor. You have seen Curtis rebuilt, and the beginnings of the expansion of Barnum. Indeed, before you leave, there will be ample opportunity to break a leg in many spots on our Medford campus. Building will soon begin on our new student housing complex, and on the new Intercultural Center at Fletcher, whose facilities will be used also by the students in Arts and Sciences. You have been with us for the beginning of a period of academic growth which, in the next 3 to 5 years, will assure uniform excellence of curricula in every part of our University and will enable us to reach our full potential as a truly great university. Already in place are our new affiliations with the New England Conservatory, and School of the Museum of Fine Arts, our new major in international law and the activities of the Tufts University Nutrition Institute. This next year will, we believe, see affiliations with two marine institu¬ tions, and the phasing in of our biosciences curriculum. Construction will begin on the Nutrition Research Center at our downtown campus and, we trust, on the school of veterinary medicine. A drama facility, the campus center, and an expansion of Cousens are also planned. Your communication of your ideas, your sense of yourselves, and your needs have contributed substantially to the planning of these endeavors. They have been particularly important to the drama facility and campus center. Throughout your four years, under the most difficult circumstances, you have been good students, good athletes, and civilized young men and women, in every way exemplary citizens of the Tufts community. We have no fear in “unleashing” you upon the world. We are proud of you, happy you have been with us, and a bit sad that you are now leaving Tufts. In the years to come, we intend to increase your pride in us, as we know our pride in you will grow. An increasing number of people are coming to the realization that dance is an exciting experience at any level, for both participants and members of an audience. Exciting because movement is inherent to all and the dancer’s instrument is his body. To develop human movement to its fullest potential is to enable an individual to generate beauty and promote aesthetic communication. A student of dance leaves a class with a sense of historical significance. Each movement is a reflection of an age as well as of a momentary interpretation. Dance involves inescapable concentration which results in the physical and mental awareness essential to feeling alive. An art process is not essentially a natural process; it is an invented one. It can take actions of organization from the way nature functions, but essentially man invents the process. And from or for that process he derives a discipline to make and keep the process functioning. That discipline too is not a natural process. The daily discipline, the continued keeping of the elasticity of the muscles, the continued control of the mind over the body’s actions, the constant hoped-for flow of the spirit into physical movement, both new and renewed, is not a natural way. It is unnatural in its demands on all the sources of energy. But the final synthesis can be a natural one, natural in the sense that the mind, body and spirit function as one. —Merce Cunningham 20 Dance is concerned with the single instant as it comes along facing page: “The Congresswoman” By Aristophanes iyfl p SL Jal - ' ' Ifok v jmBIK ' 1 : , Mpa , .saPW • «N 24 Admissions has been work¬ ing hard to attract a wide variety of students. The young Tufts team was led by senior Co-Capts. ED GAUDIANO and MIKE KELLY who became the first four-year football letterman at Tufts since 1950. KELLY was named All-East and All-New England for the second straight year. With 19 starters returning for next year, Tufts looks to rebound in 1978. SOCCER (RECORD 6-5-1) Tufts posted its 11th consecutive winning season in soc¬ cer, highlighted by a 2-0 upset of Harvard and a 2-1 upset of previously undefeated Bowdoin College. For the second straight year Co-Capt. OWEN HART was elected the team’s Most Valuable Player. Seniors JOHN PRAN- DECKI, with six goals and one assist, and KERN BAYARD with three goals and three assists were the leading scorers on the team. Seniors Dick Grilli, Mike Crawford, and Mark Slaven CROSS COUNTRY (RECORD 1-6) A young cross country team posted a 1-6 record under first-year coach PETER CLOSE, but are expected to im¬ prove next fall. The team was led by Capt. DAVE LEE, a senior, who posted a team-low time of 24:49 while winn¬ ing medalist honors by finishing 14th in the Eastern Inter¬ collegiate Meet. He is the only graduating senior on the squad. WOMEN’S TENNIS (RECORD 7-3) For the third straight year, Tufts posted a fourth place finish in the New England Tournament as well as posting a 7-3 dual match record. JUDY JACOBS won the Mass. Women’s Intercoil. Athletic Council singles championship and freshman PAM ESSERIAN was the team’s MVP. The team was captained by senior LORI SHERMAN, a top doubles player. SAILING (RECORD 53-1-1) Ranked number five in the nation, Tufts sailing team posted a 53-1-1 record including major regatta victories in the Sugar Bowl, “Hap” Moore, B.U. Trophy, Yale Dinghy Trophy and Staake Trophy races. Led by All- American JAMIE McCREARY, PAUL DUANE and ETHAN BIXBY (all seniors) and soph. JOE PETRUCCI, Tufts looks to be a prime contender for the North American cham¬ pionships at year’s end. MEN’S SWIMMING (RECORD 6-3) Led by senior Co-Capts. DAVE LINDSTEDT and JODY DURST, the men’s swimming team posted its third straight winning season with a 6-3 record and also placed second in the Greater Boston Championships, behind Harvard. Soph PETE COASSIN was the only GBL cham¬ pion in the 100-yard butterfly, setting a school record with an 0:53.7 clocking. WOMEN’S SWIMMING (RECORD 4-6) After dropping its first five meets, Tufts rebounded to win three of its next five with senior Co-Capts. NANCY CANAVAN and JULIE BILLINGSLEY leading the way. Tufts also got strong second semester help from KATHY ELLIOT and CHRIS MILLAS. MEN’S BASKETBALL Led by Co-Capts. BILL GORRA, senior, and MARK CRAIGWELL, junior, the Tufts University basketball team won 15 of its first 19 games and rose to the top of the New England polls. Twice during the season the Jumbos set single game scoring records, by beating Mass. Maritime 113-91, and then Curry College, 118-86. A strong bench led by senior MIKE RUBIN helped the Jumbos upset two nationally ranked teams; Springfield, 80-66, for the Manhattanville College Alumni Tournament, and Bran¬ ded, 83-79. MEN’S TRACK (RECORD 7-3) Led by Co-Capt. DAVE LEE, who was undefeated in the 1000-yard run and only once defeated in the mile during dual meet competition, Tufts’ indoor track team posted its best record in five years. Other standouts for the team in¬ cluded long and triple jumper DOUG STEWART, middle distanceman ANDY DANNENBERG and weightman MARK DAUSCH. WOMEN’S TRACK (RECORD 7-0) Led by miler KATHY WHITCOMB and long jumper DIANE NETHERSOLE, freshmen, Tufts’ women’s track team reached 7-0 including a two point upset over Harvard. The team also had three members of the squad crowned Greater Boston champions; KATHY WHITCOMB in the mile, DIANE NETHERSOLE in the long jump and JOANNE YURKSTAS in the high jump. BASEBALL Senior TOM BAILLARGEON keys one of the strongest pitching staffs Tufts has had in years. STEVE SPERONI will shore up the middle of the infield while juniors KEVIN O’BRIEN and DON LEACH head up the offensive attack. MEN’S LACROSSE A strong defense pillared by senior Co-Capt. JEFF CARP, soph LEE BURRESS and senior CHIP ROCHE key Tufts’ hopes for a fourth straight winning season. The Jumbos will base their attack on the midfield power of Co. Capt. TOM FLANAGAN, SEAN NEROLICH, JOHN BUCKLEY and BRAD FALK. Goal is the major question mark. WOMEN’S LACROSSE The winningest spring team on the Hill last season with a 7-3 record, the Tufts women’s lacrosse team appears solid in ’78. Goalie KITTY ATKINS, junior, will be starting her third year in the nets, while JILL GLASSGOLD anchors the defense. A strong attack unit will be headed by juniors MINNIE FOSTER, NINA FISHER, and SARAH PEASE. [• Ur 1 Z A j J L 1 i I L I 1 W A 1 b LXX- r . V 33 BH : j v 3 ' : ®! In November the Observer ran a story which exposed the illegality of the machines based on local ordinances. The machines were removed and a violent protest followed. The Somerville machines were subsequently replaced after obtain¬ ing a local permit; the Medford machines, worth thousands of dollars in revenues to the dorms, never made it back. In October Tufts accepted a $1.5 million gift from the Marcos Foun¬ dation of the Philippines, establishing a chair of East Asian and Pacific affairs at Fletcher. Mrs. Imelda Marcos, first lady of the Philip¬ pines and governor of metropolitan Manilla presented the gift. Not everyone was grateful. There was also a window in the engineer’s room looking out over the campus. Ziggy was in Studio B playing record after record, working on the eight sets for his show. Two other disc jockeys, Goldfinger and In¬ tegrity, sprawled on the sofas in the lounge next to Studio B. They watched Ziggy listen to different records; they saw his lips moving as he sang or talked to himself. (They talked about him while they watched.) Ziggy opened his mouth wide. He was probably shouting. Integrity laughed. “I think he’s sick. Look at him. He’s the strangest character. That’s the fifth record he’s listened to, and I bet he still hasn’t found the song he’s looking for. And we’ve only been watching him for fifteen minutes.” Goldfinger agreed. They saw Ziggy leap out of his chair. It was a careful leap. There were two turntables on each side of him and wire everywhere. He pulled another record out o f a stack resting against the window. He didn’t see his two viewers. The window showed a thin boy with hair that was dirty blonde when clean. It wasn’t clean. He looked like he as stoned except that he never smoked. He just never slept. Yet he looked strangely wide awake. Integrity shook his head. “Have you ever gone to the dining hall with him? I went with him a few weeks ago. It was so embarrassing. He stared at all the food, at the ladies behind the counter, at everybody’s trays. Then he just grabbed a cup, ran out of the line and sat down at a corner table with an empty tray. I got my dinner and sat down with him. God knows why.” “It sounds like something he would do,” Goldfinger said. Integrity went on. He stared at Ziggy as he talked. “Well, I asked him what was wr ong and he mumbled something about baked beans next to shortcake. I couldn’t hear him at all. I just ate and he kept on looking at the food on my tray.” “Isn’t he just the strangest?” Goldfinger said. “I think he’s obnoxious. So then he finally got back in the line, when everybody had gotten their dinner. They were just about to close, and he spent the longest time putting his food on his tray. When he finally sat down, it took him forever to eat. He’d salt his meat a bit, then add some pepper, then add a tiny bit of salt, and so on and so on. I tell you, he’s something else. Didn’t even eat much. He’s so skinny, have you noticed? Probably couldn’t press a hundred pounds.” “The strangest fellow,” Goldfinger repeated. He watched Ziggy wipe his brow. He thought how you had to expend an aw ful lot of energy to work up a sweat in that room. It wasn’t heated in there. Goldfinger never got hot in there. In fact, he usually wore a sweater the few times he used the studio for longer than one or two albums. “And then what do I do last weekend?” Integrity con- tinued. “I’m finishing up my Friday night show. It’s twelve and I thought I’d head over to Monica’s party. Ziggy is in his second home there.” Integrity pointed at the window. “I say to him that nobody spends that much time in the practice studio except if they’re new, and I tell him to come along. I didn’t think that he’d come. And oh God, did he come. We get to the party about twelve-thirty, everybody’s plastered already. I started drinking but Ziggy wouldn’t touch anything.” Goldfinger interrupted. “You think he needs something to get wrecked?” “Well anyways,” Integrity raced on, “that girl who lives with Monica, Nancy or something, she was sorta drunk, a nice looking girl. OK, she comes up to Ziggy and starts talking real nice to him. And then he heads for the door. I followed him and asked him where the hell he was going now. He muttered, ‘Home. Scratchy, didn’t mix,’ and left. I have had enough of him.” Goldfinger agreed. He wondered if Ziggy was getting cold in there. He wondered if he would find what he was obviously looking for. Ziggy had found it. Thirty-seven records and five hours later, he had finally put together the last of eight sets for his show. He had tried all day and nothing had worked. For the past half hour he had been looking for this song to end up the last set. It was a song by a country group from Alabama called “The Tennessee Trio.” The song was “Mixin’ and a Mashin’, Fixin’ for a Thrashin’.” He had played it a number of times already but decided to listen to it once more. He took the record out of its sleeve, put it on the turntable to his left, and flicked it on so he could cue up the record. The second to the last song of his set was playing on the turntable to his right. It was a Dutch folk song sung by Nico Daams. It was almost over. Ziggy played the beginning of “Mixin’ and a Mashin’ ” backwards until he found the silence he wanted. He held the record still under the moving turntable and turned up the volume on the first pot to one o’clock. As the folk song faded out, Ziggy turned down the volume on the second pot and let go of the record on the second turntable. “That’s it,” Ziggy thought. “That’s it.” He felt in complete control. It was right that the Tennessee Trio song should follow the Nico Daams song. It was the only way as far as Ziggy could see at the moment. He got up from the chair; he was wearing gym shorts, T-shirt, sweat socks, sneakers. He wasn’t tall; he was skinny. Ziggy noticed Goldfinger and Integrity. “Maybe they’re waiting to use the room,” he thought. Ziggy noticed that they were starting to get out of the sofas, so he quickly left the studio and the station. He didn’t want to have to walk with them anywhere. They would weave in and out around people on the sidewalk. It made his stomach flutter when he watched them move so carelessly about. There were two mismatched songs as far as he was concerned: they nevertheless tried to blend in with each other and it just didn’t work. Integrity was too coarse — he didn’t belong in any set. Ziggy ran down the four flights, two steps at a time, to the ground floor and went outside. It was almost 4:30 and getting dark. He headed to his dorm. He walked with his face up, looking at the sky. The texture and the color of the sky near the horizon looked like cork. Cloud formations broke up the smoothness of the sky. It was a bad way to start the set; he would have begun with something that had more tempo, a vivid orange perhaps. The clouds could stay. It needed to start off on an upbeat. The cork color became a pale yellow. Why always yellow? Ziggy wondered. Just adding more monotony to an already slow beginning. God, it was about as lifeless as his first show three years ago. Ziggy wanted to climb up on a tall ladder and rip the stretched pale yellow disk that circled the sky right off. He would have liked to throw on a deep blue disk. The pale yellow then changed to a silky lavender color. Ziggy walked faster, his head still up in the sky. The lavender was soothing to look at, but he didn’t want to be soothed. He wanted the set to get him excited, lift him up, whisk him off to space. But it remained the sky. A car honked. Ziggy jumped. He wiped the sweat off his face. He was in the middle of the street. He was through with the sky. It wouldn’t work. The car’s honk rever¬ berated in his mind. He waited for the next note to follow. Where was the second honk? He looked around. Cars whizzed by. He_ thought of a frighteningly successful arrangement; if he could just hea r it. It would start with the honk, then another honk from a bigger car than the Volkswagen that honked first. Then a laugh, then a muted scream, volume turned down low. He shouted, “Where is the second honk?” but he couldn’t find it. He would have to find it himself, or the set would be lost. He ran to a parked car; it was locked. He tried to open two more — both locked. He couldn’t honk a horn — he’d lost the set. But he did find China. Well, China found him. She had seen him walking defeatedly back to the sidewalk, head down. “Hey Ziggy,” she called. China came towards him, smiling. She was almost six feet tall; she carried a baseball bat and glove and she wore a sweat suit. They had met in the library last year, at the reserve desk. They had both been waiting for the same book. Ziggy was first in line. When the book appeared, China had said, “How long will you keep the book?” Ziggy had just stopped and said, “What?” China had repeated what she had said. And all he had wanted was to keep saying “what” so she would keep talking. They did talk for a few minutes. He didn’t remember what she had said, though, except that she asked him, “Is your name really Ziggy?” And he had said, “Is your name really China?” He didn’t remember what she said but he did notice that she set the perfect pace, changed the rhythm of their conversation before it got too wearisome. She was a set in herself — she blended with herself like nobody else he ever knew. Ziggy walked in China’s direction. He looked up again. “Hi, China. Whatcha been up to lately?” China smiled. She always started on an upbeat — that’s what Ziggy loved. She didn’t begin abruptly but eased into it with a gentle smile. “Weil, last week I had three tests, but this week I’ve been playing baseball a lot. It’s not baseball season, but I’m trying to stay in shape,” China smiled. Ziggy noticed that China’s volume was low — she must be tired. He wondered if his volume was low — sometimes China would make her voice complement his just to maintain a nice pattern. Funny, he hadn’t noticed her hair that much before; maybe it was because she was always wearing a hat of some kind — a baseball hat, ski hat, tennis hat. Her hair was dark brown and wavy and scattered in all directions, but even it had a pattern. It lay straight near the top of her head, then waved in a big sweeping arc backwards, then in the other direction another smaller arc. Her hair was all out doing whatever it pleased, some nestling close to the original pattern, keeping close to China’s head; others ventured out, almost perpendicular to her head, trying out new varia¬ tions. They jammed like this all day long, he figured. ... and be sure and stay out of people’s cars; you could get in trouble. I better go now. I have to play in a while, and I still have to stretch. Bye-Bye, Ziggy.” “Bye, China. Break a leg.” He always said that when they parted. He knew she would laugh, and that was the best way to sign out. He ambled back to the dorm. He thought it would be really nice to watch China eat; then he wouldn’t have to look at everybody else’s grotesque arrangements sitting shamefully on their trays. He would never let his tray be seen in public if it looked like theirs. Ziggy reached his dorm and ran up to his room. He knew his roommate wouldn’t be there; he had moved out a few weeks ago. His clock read 4:45. Maybe he could sleep a little. It seemed to fit. —Carol Taylor Jogged in from Scarsdale for the interview The buck stops there! it will right after I graduate! This picturesque construction by a group of Freefer residents certainly of¬ fered some stiff competition for other snow sculptors. Soon after it was completed, dorm head resident Sylvia Feinburg called Dr. Zella Luria, co-teacher of Psych 19 — Human Sexual Behavior — to inform her that her students had been doing their homework. But Luria and co-teacher Dr. Mitchel Rose denied that they would be offering extra credit to the student sculptors. 53 MEMO TO THE JUNIOR CLASS IF YOU HAVE CHANGED MAJORS SIX TIMES, DATED AT LEAST TEN DIFFERENT PEOPLE, AND HAVE PLANE TICKETS TO LONDON OR PARIS FOR THE SPRING SEMESTER, THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT YOU ARE A JUNIOR. By now the initial adjustment period has ended, we have been rejected by Harvard and Yale for the second time, and have at last resigned ourselves to the fact that Tufts University is our alma mater. The ad¬ ditional year in glorious Medford is perhaps, a part of our destiny. We juniors are a rare breed, lost in the middle of op¬ posing viewpoints. Freshmen, those inquisitive new¬ comers, are content to adjust, and in the process indulge in such activities as inter-dorm shouting matches, intra¬ dormitory water fights, and inter-personal first relationships. Sophomores drift, often aimlessly, trying desperately to abandon their riduculous freshmen in¬ clinations, yet often succumbing to them. As for the seniors, they are a serious lot, absorbed in their law, medical, and business school applications and taking life very seriously. They are preparing themselves for the real world (read “New York”). But what of the Junior class? We are far too sophisticated to associate with children, yet we are ap¬ prehensive about getting too close to our graduating peers. We are very comfortable at Tufts, very settled, and perhaps very stifled. There are moments when we just want to scream, times when Tufts is the last place on earth we want to be. But of course there are those who are so thrilled with the university that they just want to kiss the hallowed steps of Ballou Hall. Ours is a questionable ex¬ istence, and in general, the junior year is one of indeci¬ sion. Many move off campus, unable to breathe dormitory air any longer, cope with incessant activity, and eat the in¬ edibles of Cafe Carmichael. Those who remain on campus are very in and of themselves, retreating to small, well-established cliques or to an understanding girlfriend or boyfriend. We have had it with fraternity parties, MacPhie Monte Carlos, and Airport Endeavors. Boston and Cambridge are there for our enjoyment, and most of us find something or someone to amuse ourselves. We have declared our majors, but have not really determined what to do with them. Even the career- oriented pre-med throat, the Wall Street hopeful, and the Edward R. Murrows of tomorrow are besieged with doubt. Who am I? Where am I going? And how do I maintain my sanity for another year? We take each day at a time, struggling desperately to maintain an image of confidence and sophistication. Even if we are confused, there is no sense letting everyone else realize it. Hopefully we will find ourselves, in our work, our trips abroad, or through our friends and experiences. As we approach 21 (Oh My God!) the tension mounts. Our parents expect nothing less than perfection; at the same time our professors indicate that this is highly unlikely. Faced with unprecedented competition for graduate schools, a declining job market, and rising expenses, many of our choices are pre-determined. Life often seems unbearable and difficult — probably because it is. BRUCE H. NEWBERG Students beating a giant tongue into submission 54 I l The gorilla snowstorms of January 20 and February 7 were no joking matter. Tufts closed for five academic days after being buried with 47 inches (20 inches from the first storm and 27 from the second). The February snowstorm alone was responsible for over 70 deaths and $1 billion dollars in damages in New England, making it the worst storm of the century. 55 With all nonessential traffic banned from February 7-12, eastern Massachusetts suddenly became a giant pedestrian mall, including Har¬ vard Square shown here. 1 Fraternities provide Tufts with a source of entertain¬ ment, as they tend to throw huge parties that attract the entire school. Initiations have become a new art form, par¬ ticularly last year when Delta Upsilon pledges mooned in front of the picture windows in Nils Yngve. The Preppies chuckled amongst themselves, M.R.S. girls screamed, N.Y. Sophisticates were ap¬ propriately shocked and ap¬ palled, the Earthy Hippies handed them daisies, Car¬ men Miranda’s bumped, and the Pre-meds never looked up from their books. 62 Anyone at Tufts knows that the Reserve room is not a place to study, but a place to be seen. The noise level approaches that of Logan airport, though there is a fascade of studying in progress. 63 It seems that the sincere interest to perform well is being replaced by the sole desire to have a commenuaure moui ai u. ian ow.w. application. With a proposed $515 hike in next year’s tuition and fees pushing the total cost of a year at Tufts to nearly $8,000, the at¬ tention professional studies is receiving seems rational and pragmatic. Yet parents and students are still concerned with the ques¬ tion: Does the cost exceed the value received? 64 Fissure of Rolando ' Personality j FRONTAL LOB (-O V Speech OCCIPITAL LOBE Hearing Vision EMPORAL LOBE Voluntary motor control Conscious sensations CEREBELLUM fl JLTj Tufts is a pressure cooker of competitive individuals, and probably awards more ulcers than bachelor degrees. “In long term studies we have seen that the counseling center, excluding the health services, sees between 25 and 30 percent of any graduating class in connection with depression-related problems. That’s roughly 300 people. Add 100 for the health services and you’re right around a third of the class — and that doesn’t even include the stu¬ dents who never try to seek help,” says Dr. Jonathan Slavin, head of the Counseling Center. “The senior year also poses adjustment problems for many students. They face not only separation from the friends whom they have accumulated in the past four years, not only the loss of the sheltering university environment, but also the fear that they have either made the wrong career choice, or that they will fail to succeed in the career that they have chosen.” GROWING OLD: SOON A FAD? It seems to me, as I observe the world around me, that our society has become too youth oriented. I realize that it is probably a passing fad thrust upon us by the cosmetics industry and their advertising agencies, but I’m beginning to tire of this fad. I’m sick to death of advertisements assaulting me from all directions, urging me to look young, feel young, and what have you. This bothers me for two reasons; first, I already am young and don’t need any out¬ side aid to look or feel young, and second, I prefer to look old. Old age should really be the next fad; given enough time it probably will be. Looking old is much more en¬ joyable than looking young, and it has many more advan¬ tages. No one expects an elderly person to give up a seat on the bus. Old grey-haired people look much more dis¬ tinguished and wise than do young people, and old peo¬ ple can always get out of doing unpleasant tasks and hard work by pleading old age and arthritis. Half the fun of looking old is the process of making yourself look that way. The methods for speeding up the aging process are all enjoyable, easy and cheap. Smok¬ ing heavily, excessive drinking and drug consumption, poor sleeping habits, a steady diet of unhealthy junk food, and a complete disregard for one’s health will all speed you on your way to looking and feeling old. I’m not too sure what effect sex has on this process. Granted it’s a lot of fun, but it is also very healthy (aside from S M). I’ll let you figure out how it fits in. The best part about making yourself look old is that it gives you an excuse to indulge yourself in anything you choose while arguing that it is serving a focused purpose. You can be a lazy, alcoholic, drug-addicted in¬ somniac and no one who is trend - or fashion-conscious can criticize you. Drinking whiskey, smoking camels, and playing poker until sunrise will replace early morning jogging and push-ups. Besides, who really wants to get up at dawn to dodge vicious dogs and run for miles simply to benefit one’s health? It’s not much fun, but destroying one’s health can be, especially when it’s for a purpose. When looking old becomes the rage we’ll all save a great deal of money as well as have more fun. Because cold cream, shaving cream, razors, hair dye, and all of the 68 v-%, At t Mr w - i V,iJ 1 1 V 1 i-i I w 1 other paraphenalia needed to look young will no longer be needed, it can be exported to the Soviet Union to help our balance of payments problem. Neat new clothes will not be needed very often, the emphasis being instead upon battered, wrinkled, and slightly shabby clothing; call it the Bogart detective look. I think the old age fad will begin to catch on soon, at least I hope it does. I’m tired of seeing thousands of wholesome, bright-eyed, healthy young people everywhere and nary a wrinkled old degenerate among them. —PETER ATKINSON Diane Ketlak J’78 Beth Winston J’78 71 EPpipp M - 1978 SENIOR CLASS VICILATE STATE-1 1 A jr j 1 SmSSS Si ■I ■■ a Hha iHH IttB MM MBmI z v flUSSS I Thomas Amante Diane Alfano Gus Abele Mark Anderson Daniela Andronic Lisa Allen David Ayers Sally Baldwin Louis Broad Lane Brown Howard Chase 76 Emily Bulian 77 Larry Apolzon Charlene Andros J. The R3 combines the latest electronic technology with Leica’s famous mech¬ anical precision and optical quality. The result is a camera that is both automatic and manual in operation, both selective and integral in metering. Integral metering is for most normal lighting con¬ ditions, selective metering is for both backlighted or high contrast situations. Both metering modes can be used with either automatic or manual operation. Together, they make the R3 capable of capturing virtually every photographic nuance. EDITOR: KEN BORTNER COVER DESIGN: lois orlando BOOK DESIGN PRINTING: kb graphics, inc. Special thanks to the Observer and to Harry Zane of the Public Informa¬ tion Office for providing much excellent material for the yearbook. Very special thanks to Steve Gesing and Louise Akillian of the Student Activities Office for putting up with the many hassles and headaches we caused. The thread of whisky burned pleasantly in the gullet and then my stomach, like the sun outside, began to glow, and the delight of freedom also began to expand within me ... Once in a while, I get shocked into upper wakefulness, I turn a corner, see the ocean, and my heart tips over with happiness — it feels so free! Then I have the idea that, as well as beholding, I can also be beheld from yonder and am not a discrete object but incorporated with the rest, with universal sapphire, purplish blue. For what is this sea, this atmosphere, doing within the eight-inch diameter of your skull? (I say nothing of the sun and the galaxy which are also there.) At the center of the beholder there must be space for the whole, and this nothing-space is not an empty nothing but a nothing reserved for everything. You can feel this nothing-everything capacity with ecstasy and this was what I actually felt... I experienced a bliss that I knew perfectly well was not mad. —Saul Bellow HUMBOLDT’S GIFT
