—Academics is something you create. You can make it as hard or as easy as you want. It ' s going to be that way for the rest of your life. —I ' m applying to law school. Last semester I decided I needed to get some A ' s to graduate with honors. I did some extra work and got those A ' s, but I don ' t think 1 retained any more because of that. —I was in England last year and I can ' t tell you how jealous they were of my being able to attend a liberal arts school. Over there they spend their entire college careers taking courses in their majors. They can only take two non-major courses in four years. They were really envious of me for being able to take any course I wanted to over here. 14

—What are the educational commitments of Tufts? First of all, we recognize that our undergraduate education is directed towards the whole person. We are educating students to lead lives, not primarily to hold jobs. Undergraduate liberal education is not vocational, but it is certainly functional in helping each student to develop a clear and lasting self-concept and to become a responsible citizen. Burton Hallowell —I don ' t think the calibre of students is as good now as it was four years ago. There is less interest in the subject matter. People are working to get through rather than to learn for learning ' s sake. People can ' t be intellectually committed to a course when they are pushing to get through in three years and are taking five or six classes. —My education has been self satisfying. It doesn ' t have anything to do with my career. That ' s the value of a liberal arts education. 16
