IN MEMORY OF LEO RICH LEWIS DEDICATION To the memory of Professor Leo Rich Lewis, interpreter and leader of music, ad¬ visor and friend to generations of students, composer and Tufts man, living still in his college songs, we, the Class of nineteen hundred forty-six, are honored to dedicate this Jumbo Book, in appreciation of his music and in remembrance of his friendship YEAR BOOK STAFF 1946 Editors-in-Chief Oscar E. Richard Jane Metcalfe Editors Guy Owens Marjorie Ford Art Editors Jack Baldwin Esther Blanchard Circulation Editors George Dougan Madelaine Silva Staff Marietta Allen Mary Elizabeth Cronin Anne Drury Shirley Ericksen Olga Kuczun Jean Lissowski Jane Turner Priscilla McIntyre Claire Songile Nettie Pease Phylis Redford Marjorie Stein Jean Taggart The committee responsible for publishing this edition of the Jumbo Book justly deserves much praise for what has been accomplished. The obstacles have been so numerous and of such magnitude that it appeared to be an impossible assignment. However, the com¬ mittee has worked faithfully and conscientiously to overcome these. Now, I am certain that the members of this class are provided with a small but excellent publication, which in the years to come, will assist them to recall pleasant memories of their days at Tufts College. IN RETROSPECT Now thatwe ' ve all bought frames for our diplomas and torn up our last final exams, we can take time out to reminisce like all good alums. Do you remember .-? We spent our first night in college getting acquainted with anew roommate and displaying pictures of the men in uniform, butwho could ever forget our second night-- the one at Shipman House when we met our counselors and classmates. How little any of us realized what strong and lasting friendships were being formed that night. The big rally when Three P ' s invited us to our first Pretzel Night. We laughed until our sides split at Maddie Silva, Rickey Ericksen, and Dick Holden put¬ ting real feeling into the tryouts of Romeo and Juliet . Sore muscles and sunburns were the thing back in August ' 43. Farm hands of Jackson and Tufts treked weekly to Hollis, New Hampshire, to aid the food shortage. And incidentally, many a match was made while picking apples. October 2—the S.S. Tufts steamed into port that night with all hands on deck for our first Regimental formal. We successfully defeated Bates ' football squad in the afternoon and, being frosh, we were more thrilled than at our own Senior Ball. Not many Saturdays after that we trounced Harvard 13-6. How could we help it, though, with a cheer like H-A-R with a V. Hell Week—We of Jackson looked so darn cute in our huge green bows, faces shiny without make-up but after all, it was convenient to wear pigtails to class. It was a swell parade the night we burned our bows, even though there are a few who will never forgive the inmates of Richardson-We weren ' t even praying for rain, too. Our first Christmas Sing and the two which followed in ' 44 and ' 45 were typical examples of Tufts ' cheery spirit. We definitely chose a singing college even to the barber shop quartet. March ' 44—a whole year of college over. We passed our exams and we ' re sophomores? Now just watch us conduct a Hell Week—but we never got the chance. We were Juniors too soon. Spring on the Hill is sweeter far than springs be¬ fore or after are. Our first spring on the Hill proved this and with Mayday caroling, spring formals, and commencement we became more than ever a part of Tufts. But no one can be a true part of Tufts until he has experienced the thrill of a Tufts Night and our Leo conducting the Alma Mater . Posterity will never know what they ' ve missed. v r e had courage, we had ambition, yes we went to school in the summer!! Friends and relatives gasped- - itwas an unheard of thing..but we said we loved it and we did. We went to a Circus Dance and a Navy Ring o Dance while it was 190 in the shade. We listened to open air concerts, had splash parties, and, no, I don ' t think we ever studied. That Fall we had our usual football season but there was one history-making event. Men were allowed in Jackson dorms more than six inches beyond the front door. In fact, they were allowed to wander above the first floor. They gave us a white-glove inspection, but we passed, or I think we did. The Kursaal--our den of iniquity--skyrocketed in popularity after Let ' s Dance Hour was inaugurated. Thursday nights were big nights for Tufts and Jackson and the battle cry became Get that guy (gal) . A second June commencement rolled around and we bravely watched our elders take off for the big world outside while we kept telling ourselves one more year--I hope , Ballou Terrace suddenly became trans-? formed the night of that Senior banquet and we watched nimble figures flit about portraying mythical char¬ acters. The war was suddenly over and we found ourselves with a Vets ' Club fraternity spirit growing, and old Tufts men returning to the Hill. We were amazed to think we were seniors. Now we were electing class officers, planning a yearbook, a prom, and looking for a job. We watched our classmates in Claudia , Of Mice and Men , and Night Must Fall . We madly took in formals, frat parties, the All College Sing, nd waited patiently for a swim in the new pool. Every minute had to count because there weren ' t very many left. Then June came and we took exams, went through Commencement and graduations, and now we are alums.--Alums proud to be called Tufts men and women and convinced that time on the Hill is sweeter far than times before or after are.
