Among the first settlers in the Tucker area, very early in the 180033 was a young man named Green ville Henderson. He settled on a 3,000 acre grant from the Governor of the State of Georgia. On this land, which encompassed the present site of Tucker, Mr. Henderson developed a prohtable whiskey and brandy-making industry. Maintaining his apple and peach orchards and cornjields required the services of over 200 slaves. The closest market for his products was Savan- nah, almost 300 miles away. Henderson con- structed a grist mill and post offce at the present intersection of Md vale and Hender- son Mill Roads. These stood until the turn of the twentieth century. Mr. Henderson is domain did not escape the wrath of the Civil War. He reportedly hid gold and food supplies in kettles to prevent their conjiscation by Union troops. Union forces under the command of Logan, Gar- raral and Lightburn came through Tucker and headed toward Stone Mountain along Fellowship Road in July, 1864. His mission accomplished, Logan withdrew his Union troops from Brownings Courthouse lin T uckerj to Hen- derson is Mill on the evening of July 18. They wanted to camp near water. The next day they joined other Federal troops near the Midway Baptist Church, located at the pres- ent intersection of BriarclU'f and Henderson Mill Roads. From here they marched toward Decatur where they engaged in the Battle of Atlanta. Greenville Henderson died in 1869. His wife, Nancy, died in 1892 at tlze age of 102. About 30 members of the Henderson family plus a number of their slaves lie buried in a little cemetery just off Henderson Mill Road. Following the Civil Wan times were ex- tremely dyficult throughout the South, espe- cially for cotton farmers. In the Browning Community, Greenville Henderson is 3000 acres was, like large plantations all over the South, divided into smaller tracts of land. The Browning name comes from another family that settled early in this area. One member of the family, Tom Browning, was a prosperous saloon owner of the post-Civil War era. A horse-race track was located on Fellowship Road near his saloon. It is re- ported that farmers came to the track in the summertime to race their horses and place bets, and just naturally frequented the sa-
