We’ll Take The Best - Forget The Rest. And Someday We’ll Find These Are.............. Times We. the members of the 1982 Yearbook Staff, dedicate with pride this the Fourth Edition of Tu-Endi-Wei to the parents of the 1982 graduating class. As Seniors, looking back on daps gone by, we realize just how much we owe to our parents — the people who are really responsible for our success. We feel we have been blessed with great parents, who cared for us as the individuals we really are. They lived with us as we grew and changed. They put up with our many antics and supported us through our heartbreaks. They have been our friends, they've helped us with our problems; and they were always there when we needed them. The life of a parent is not often an easy one. It is full of many obstacles and holds many tears. Tears shed through love for loved ones . . . Tears of joy, tears of sadness, tears of fear and anticipation. It is with those same tears — of joy, sadness, fear and anticipation — that we leave T.C.H.S. behind and move on into adulthood. This move would not be possible if it were not for the loving mothers and fathers who stood by us through the years. It is to them, our parents, that we dedicate this yearbook ‘ Best of Times”, with hearts full of love and thanks. We leave hoping that someday, someway, we will be able to show this same kind of love, understanding, and support to our own children. 4 Ray and Lucille Adams Barbara Anderson Ron and Sharon Hovatter Ruth and Victor Beckman James and Johanna Bergstrom Denzil and Phillis Bever Janet Bohon Jerry Bolyard and Carol Hebb Kermit and Ruth Bonner Coy and Pat Bonner Charles and Arlene Brock Loye and Sue Burns Donald and Ann Cangley Fred and Jean Loughry Edward and Dorothy Carr the late Ronald Chenoweth and Jean Bolyard T. and S. Your friends, and you . . . unforgettable memories. Standing in the entranceway Empty hails and silent classrooms . . . Only a single pair of footsteps echo down the corridors Remembering the laughter that once filled the empty space. Crowds who once shuffled back and forth- Rushing to be on time, never quite making it. And thinking of familiar smiles of Friends; the whispered secrets of what we were then . . . and what we wanted to become' Is that what we are now? 8 Adams. Donald Keith Anderson. COACHES— Tom Klus Sam Yokum Bill Haddox Bill Rosenau Glenn Patsy 97 THE 1981 FOOTBALL SEASON The year started out with back-to-back losses. Then we bounced back to win our next two games with one of those being Elkins. Our third and final loss came at Morgantown where we lost by two field goals. Going into our sixth game we made some personal changes. The changes worked out well because we won our last five games. We had a good year winning seven games while losing only three. The class of ’82 is the first class to go to TCHS for four years, and they are going out as winners. TODD BOLYARD: Todd played FB for the first five games and was our team’s leading rusher. The last five games he played QB. He is like having a coach on the field. PAT CRAKES: Pat made first team all P.V.C. at the Defensive End position. He is a team player and a hard hitter. JOE MASON: Joe contributed his skills as both QB and receiver. He was one of our captains who led our team to a 7-3 record. Joe made all P.V.C. as a punter. TOM MAXWELL: Playing at TE on offense, Tom was one of our most improved athletes. He always played with a great effort. JIM McWlLLIAMS: Jim played TB on offense and HB on defense. He was a very hard runner that helped give us the power we needed. JEFF NESTOR: Jeff gave our team the outside speed and ran our reverses. He played as TB and Receiver on offense and HB on defense. RICK NESTOR: Rick did a super job in the middle of our defensive line with his quickness. He also played FB. ALLEN PJ1LL1PS: Allan anchored our defense as middle LB. He always gave 100% on every play. If we had given a hustle award, he would have received it. FRANK PIFER: Frank played offensive and defensive tackle. He made 2nd team All State and was captain of our team. His leadership was demonstrated by his play. DAVID HELMICK: David was a guard on offense. He is a team player. He did not start all games but tried to do what he could for the team. With the experience of the older wrestlers helping the new wrestlers, the team progressed very well. The team set a school record with two regional champions. TOM MAXWELL (185): Captain of the team with a 17-6 record, Tom because our leader and almost qualified for the states. DAVID HELMICK (132): David was a good wrestler for two periods but seemed to find a way to lose in the 3rd period. JIM McWlLLIAMS (167): A first year wrestler who had a winning record, Jim was very strong, and if he had wrestled for four years, he would have been good enough to go to the states. JIM STILES (UL): Jim was a hard worker and wrestled his best when there was pressure on him to win for the team. Leadline scorers for the season were Kelly Corcoran with 407 Points for the year shooting 40.7% for an average of 18.5 points. Jill Burns was the second high scorer for the year with 13 points per game for a total of 287 points. Additionally, Jill contributed many rebounds and several blocked shots in most games. Tammy Oldaker was second in senior scoring from a point guard position contributing .7 points per game. Michelle Hott, in 9 games scored .2 points per game. Kelly was awarded co-captin of the PVC conference in post season voting. Additionally, Kelly, Jill, and Punkin were vote Honorable Men- tion All State Team. 118 THE LIONESSES GAVE IT THERE ALL 119 120 Tucker County Mighty Mountain Lions 1981-82 Varsity Team LEFT TO RIGHT: 1st row: Frank Pifer, Shawn Nichols, Greg Stevens. Victory Bound 122 The Season Beginning with seven consecutive wins and a ranking of third in the state AA basketball poll, this season set many records that will be used to measure future TCHS teams. It finished as the first Tucker County Varsity Basketball team to have a winning record-(15-7). It produced a Holiday Tournament Championship, a tie for the Potomac Valley Conference Championship, a first team ALL-STATER, and a Coach of the Year award. Gone from this team will be four excellent seniors who provided leadership both on and off the floor. These young men have set a foundation upon which a program can be built. For this foundation, we say “THANKS!” COACH CARL WATSON Seniors JOE MASON: First team ALL-STATE, first team All- Potomac Valley Conference, selected to play in the West Vlrginia-Maryland All Star Game, second team All-Area as selected by the Cumberland Times newspaper. He is the career scoring leader with 1193 points in his three years of varsity play at TCHS. What more needs to be said—a super player. TODD BOLYARD: A great deal of this year’s success came from Todd's ability to handle the other team's pressure and find the openings where we could attack. He now holds the record for the most assists In a career—255. He called the offenses and directed the defense from the floor. He made honorable mention ALL- STATE. He was actually an on- the-floor coach. FRANK PIFER: When Frank played well, so did the team. A punishing rebounder and defensive player; the fellow who started our fast break. He was the most underrated player on the team. A team leader who not only provided verbal leadership but produced on the court when it was needed. A coach’s player. DOUG CANGLEY: An excellent competitor. Doug really worked hard to improve his game and push those who played before him. His greatest asset may have been his leadership by doing. A pleasure to coach. 124 125 Lion Pride Intensity 126 1981 Holiday Tournament Championship Victory Congra tula tions Coach Watson ‘Coach Of The All-Tourney Team Tucker County Junior Varsity LEFT TO RIGHT: 1st row: JV Cheerleaders; 2nd row: Mike Better, Mark Crosten, Danny Moore, Mike Martin, and Tom Fankhauser; 3rd row: Don Pifer, Denzil Evans, Jack Mullenax, and Coach Tom Gutshall. 128 The Junior Varsity Basketball team had an outstanding 1981-1982 season. With the power of Plfer, jumping of Jack, buckets by Crosten, drippling from Danny, moves by Martin, battling of Betler. energy of Evans, and finishing touch from Fankhauser, the JV team finished with a superb record of 16 wins and only 3 losses. Alot of potential will be moving up to the Varsity position next year— they practiced as a team, played as a team, and as a team, they were victorious! The TCHS Freshmen boys basketball team finished the 1981-82 season with an overall record of 11 wins and 8 losses. The Mt. Lions faced some strong opposition in both regular season and two post-season tournaments which followed. In the regular season which saw the Lions win 10 of 16 outings, the 6 losses came to 5 AAA teams and one JV team. Three AAA wins, 1 JV, and 6 AA and A made up the 10 victories. During tournament play the Freshman team played on a Monday night in the Big Ten Tournament at Grafton, defeating Buckhanon rather convincingly only to lose on Wednesday to powerful West Fairmont, who went on to win the tournament. That Thursday saw the Lions traveling to Southern to take on Keyser (a team Tucker had split with during the regular season) in the PVL Tournament. The playing of 3 tournament games in 4 nights took a toll on the Lions as they lost to the eventual PVL Champs; Keyser. Pat Chenoweth was 1 in scoring, rebounding, block shots, free throws, field goal percentage, and 2 in field goals made. Allen Moore was 1 in field goals attempted, field goals made, and 2 in field goal percentage, scoring and rebounding. Robin Bowley was 1 in assists, free throws made, free throw percentage, and 2 in free throws attempted. Bernard Nice was 1 in steals and 2 in field goals attempted and free throw percentage. Todd Lee was 2 in steals. Jerry Cooper was 2 in assists and Marty Miller was 2 in blocked shots. Others who contributed greatly were David Harkins, Dennis Lansberry, David Judy, and Al Kalinaskas. With the outstanding leadership of the team’s three seniors— Todd Bolyard’s hustling; Joe Mason’s pitching; and Frank Pifer’s batting—the Lions went on to clinch first place in the Sectional Tournaments by defeating tough opponent, Coalton. The team worked together to achieve success and held their heads high, even when things seemed bad. They were fighters and they fought their way to victory after victory. Todd, Joe, and Frank set an example of pride and sportsmanship that followed through, and was admired by the entire team. They will be missed by Coach Yokum and myself, and the team; but they will remain a part of Tucker County’s spirit for years to come. After a mediocre start, the season was climaxed by beating Southern High School of Maryland in a sudden death play-off after tying them in regula- tion play. From this point, the season got progressively better: the coup-d’ etat was the winning of the PVC Championship in a convincing fashion a week later. The disappointment of the year was losing out in the Regional Tournament to the eventual winner, Berkley Springs, who we defeated twice in regular season play. We did not beat ourselves; they simply played superior golf. Individually, we were led by senior Jim Moss throughout most of the season. However, sophomore Mike Better had a most surprising season for Tucker County by coming within one shot of qualifying for the State Golf Tournament. Any other year, Mike would have qualified for States, but because of a rule change, he was not awarded the opportunity to participate in the State Golf Tournament. Other contributing members of the Golf Team were: senior Rob Klein who filled in a needed role, sophomore P.S. Martin who came on strong as the season progressed and who will be counted upon heavily next season, and sophomore Jerry Parsons whose unlimited potential speaks well of his ability for the upcoming season. Senior Todd Bolyard, who was not available at all times because of other obligations, also contributed to the team’s success. After only four years of competition, we have finally built up a successful program geared for winning. With a nucleus of three, returning lettermen, we must fill in three positions in order to continue our winning program.
