The third TRUXTUN, DD 229, was commissioned on '16 February 1921. After a year of service on the eastern sea- board, she departed for the Asiatic Station, where shespent the next decade patrolling the Philippines-,H the coast of China, and .Japanese Water. From 1932 to 1939, DD 229 operated from San Diego, before return- ing to the Atlantic. In February 1942, she left Portland, Maine, 'with the destroyer WILKES and the stores ship POLLUX, enroute to Newfoundland. Caught in a violent winter storm, the ships went aground. and POLLUX were wrecked, with the loss of 110 lives. . of the past - .-.i99c19af.T1P9W9r9divi' guided , mis The fourth TRUXTUN was launched on 9 March 1944 as DE 282. In mid-1944 her desig- nation was changed to APD 98, and conversion to a high-speed ,transport was begun.
