The school used its official name of First District Normal School from 1905 to 1919, but it was popularly known as K.S.N.S.—the Kirksvillc State Normal School. Fven today, old-timers speak of it under that title, or affectionately they abbreviate it to the Normal. In 1919 it was named by the legislature the Northeast Missouri State Teachers Cnlleg£xuU||0Mifiitt ts name today. Picklcr tan created a new library- building. but the coll rcmained without a replacement for Baldwin Hall until k28. President JJflkiwin remained with the institution until 188! when he resigned'l acccpt the presi- dency of the Sam iouston Normal Institute at Huntsville, Texas. Since that time the pr klency here has been tilled by Mr P. Nason, pro tern. 1881-82; J. P. Blanton. 1882-91; W. D. Dobson, 1XW-99; John R. Kirk. I899-MJe5; Eugene Fair. 1925-37; and Walter H. Ryle, since 1937. The portraits o all the past presidents a in the first floor corridor of Baldwin Hall. Th annual enrollment of students has steadily grown from the beginning. At the end «5k the first year they were 140 students in what was called the normal depaitmeni. In the fall of 1956 tnfcc were 1763 persons attending classes on the campus, and in the fall of 1957 the number was 2003. The faculty has likewise grown in numbers. In the first year there were only six members! faculiif In 1927 there were 64. and in 1957 58 there arc I 13 on the faculty roll, I I of whom are enter Jus list. The college of 1867. as well lis that of 1900. had no entrance requirements. High schools were ot numerous, but when a high school graduate came to the First District Normal School, he was graduakd in Jne or two years. If he came from the eighth grade to the Normal School, he finished in four years. Gra%- uajy between 1900 and 1915 the highv school courses were added and made a prerequisite to the normf ool courses. The college began issuing the Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1912. basing foil its of college on lom years oMff nT llOOl But until the early '2()'s, high school work was offered in thy liege. In 1947 the college announced (lie fifth year of work culminating in the master's degree, and in 58 it is announcing that a fivc-y«$rtr cowtc program is to become the principal program. In the history of the college, the twenty-year period from 1937 to the present has been one of plant instruction. The original thirteen acres have been expanded into a forty-five acre site and the number f buildings has been greatly increased. In 1937 there existed the Pickier Library Building. Old Science fall.
