SENIOR CLASS PLAY ROMEO D JULlET Sets up, costumes made, make-up on, stage ready, lights dim, trumpets sound, and then the curtain goes up and on with the senior class play, HRomeo and Julieton ln Verona, ltaly, there was an ancient enmity between the House of Capulet and House of Montague to such extent that the lords and their servants fought side by side in frequent street brawls. Despite this sad state of human relations, Romeo and Juliet, each from a rival house, fell deeply in love and married secretlyo ln the meantime, Lord Capu- let found an exemplory young man, Paris to be his daughter's husbanda To protect Juliet from charges of bigamy, Friar Laurence supplied her with a vial to make her fall into a death-like sleep. Romeo, on the other hand, believed her to be dead and purchased a poi- son from an apothecary. Romeo visited the tomb where Juliet lay in her trance, After taking his farewell kiss, he took the poison and died beside his beloved wifeu When Juliet revived and found her lover dead, she killed herself with Romeo's daggerg The tragic ending of the two young lovers make their bostinate fathers reconcil their long-lived hatredsu Inspite of the tragic theme which enshrouded the play, several comical events took place which porved to be inevitableg Remember the sword fight in act one? Poor Benvo- lio's sword was bent to a 90 angle, but the show went on. How about Mercutios's great solo and his sweet voice? And that balcony-Uwill we ever. ever forget that balcony? Only one shaky ladder was used to get up there, and that platform wasn't any too stable either, Once poor Romeo ripped his trousers climbing down and had to report to one of Veronals able tailors, Weren't the love scenes great? Speaking of scenes, what about those death scenesu Wasn't Tybalt the perfect dead man? Mrs. Erickson caught him chewing gum once at dress rehearsal - just the way a normal corpse would be. Despite all catastrophes, the five weeks we spent in production will never be for- gotten! IO
