KIE 14 Another purpose of STANAVFORLANTS mission is the surveillence of other navies of the world. In August, it was reported a Soviet task Force consisting of several destroyers and a cruiser escorting the newest addition to the Soviet fleet, the Aircraft Carrier KIEV, were conducting operations in the North Sea. Our squadron was detached by SACLANT, QSupreme Allied Commander Atlanticj, from our routine exercises in order to observe KIEV in operation. Being the first of her class, KIEV attracted great interest from the other countries of the world. TRUETT,S role was to gather as much information as possible during our brief encounter with the KIEV. The successful launching and operation of the 'KIEV is a major advancement in Soviet Naval Power.
