STANDING NAVAL FORCE ATLANTIC STANAVFORLANT is composed of between four and nine destroyer or frigate type ships, operating as one unit on la continuing basis. Ships of various nationalities will normally remain with the squadron for a period of up to six months. They are relieved by a unit of the same nationality or a vessel from another NATO member. Commanding the squadron is a commodore who is selected annually from one of the countries contributing ships to the force. The commodore is aided by a staff of officers who are also provided by participating countries. The STANDING NAVAL FORCE is tasked with achieving four basic objectives. First, it serves to foster cooperation and maintain naval cohesiveness within the Atlantic Alliance. The force participates in numerious NATO exercises, as well as National Operations, in both European and North American waters throughout the year. During these intensive at sea periods, the force maintains a high level of training while continually evaluating NATO Naval Tactics in the areas of ASW, AAW, Surface Warfare, and Convoy Duty. Equally important is the demonstration of NATO's solidarity and unity through the formation of a single Multi-National naval squadron. During any given year, STANAVFORLANT may visit up to 30 ports in 10 countries. In each port general visiting and various people-to-people programs allow citizens to judge for themselves the feasibility and flexibility of NATO. Another important function of the squadron is its immediate availability, and readiness to deploy to the scene of any possible confrontation to reaffirm the determination of the NATO Alliance and provide a visible deterrent force. Should a situation like this occur, the squadron would also possibly have to fulfill its final objective, which is to provide the nucleus around which a more powerful and versatile NATO Naval Force could be formed.
