As the ships company looks forward to the excitement of foreign seas, those behind are left with only memories to fill the vacant space in their lives. That facing the dangers of a life at sea requires some courage, there can be no doubt. Often forgotten, however, is the quiet fortitude and loyalty demanded of those who stand on the shore watching the ship disappear over the horizon. These are singular qualities, founded in individual character and nurtured by patriotism, faith, and' love. To those who faithfully waitedg to those whose image we carried with us in our hearts, this book is respectfully and gratefully dedicated. TRUETT: This handsome book is an appropriate momento of a unique experience. Long after I have left I TRUETT I shall take pleasure and satisfaction in thumbing through it and remembering the hard work, the good times, and the valuable friendship that were a part of our time with STANAVFORLANT. I will remember, too, as I look at the photographs of the men who served under my command, your unflagging enthusiasm and pride in ship, Navy and country which sustained us through a long separ- ation from home and a heavy operating schedule. I hope that you will have time to sit down with your friends and families in the future, show them this book, and perhaps share with them some of the excitement a sailor enjoys when serving in a good ship with a first rate crew. I know that I shall, and that I will take enormous atisfaction in boasting that I was a part of T TT. ' . T HOCK CDR USN l LCDR J. COMMODORE COX lives at Rake near Liss Hampshire with his wife, Ann, and four children, three boys and a girl. I USS TRUETT joined Commodore JQMH. Cox, Royal Navy Ccmxmwnnzz STANDING NAVAL. Ponce A1'1,AN1i1cf FLAC-:SHIP : HMS LONDON 7 December STANAVFORLANT in Kiel in July and it took no time at all for me to realize that a very special ship had joined - a ship with a high professional ability but above that,a community of men with a particular spirit and esprit who were soon at home with the six other nationalities in the Force. In the six months have worked hard - and have earned yourselves deployment you played hard. You a deservedly high reputation at sea and have been First Class Ambassadors for the USN and NATO ashore. Although not equipped to carry a Flag, you allowed me to conduct business from USS TRUETT during I was sorry to leave. Force. You have added during your deployment a happy homecoming and May we meet again soon dank ZW, Exercise TEAMWORK. Ours is a unique to its lustre I wish you all well earned leave. Q1 J.M.H. COX Commodore, Royal Navy 1976 STANDING NAVAL FORCE ATLANTIC STANAVFORLANT is composed of between four and nine destroyer or frigate type ships, operating as one unit on la continuing basis. Ships of various nationalities will normally remain with the squadron for a period of up to six months. They are relieved by a unit of the same nationality or a vessel from another NATO member. Commanding the squadron is a commodore who is selected annually from one of the countries contributing ships to the force. The commodore is aided by a staff of officers who are also provided by participating countries. The STANDING NAVAL FORCE is tasked with achieving four basic objectives. First, it serves to foster cooperation and maintain naval cohesiveness within the Atlantic Alliance. The force participates in numerious NATO exercises, as well as National Operations, in both European and North American waters throughout the year. During these intensive at sea periods, the force maintains a high level of training while continually evaluating NATO Naval Tactics in the areas of ASW, AAW, Surface Warfare, and Convoy Duty. Equally important is the demonstration of NATO's solidarity and unity through the formation of a single Multi-National naval squadron. During any given year, STANAVFORLANT may visit up to 30 ports in 10 countries. In each port general visiting and various people-to-people programs allow citizens to judge for themselves the feasibility and flexibility of NATO. Another important function of the squadron is its immediate availability, and readiness to deploy to the scene of any possible confrontation to reaffirm the determination of the NATO Alliance and provide a visible deterrent force. Should a situation like this occur, the squadron would also possibly have to fulfill its final objective, which is to provide the nucleus around which a more powerful and versatile NATO Naval Force could be formed. f Y nv x . , ,,, I -I FGS BAYERN GERMANY 1 JULY 76-29 JULY 76 7 HMS NORFOLK UNITED KINGDOM 1 JULY 76-21 NOV 76 HMCS HURON CANADA 1 JULY 76-29 JULY 76 FGS KARLSRUHE GERMANY 29 JULY 76-7 DEC 76 HNOMS NARVIK NGRWAY 19 AUG 76-7 DEC 76 HNLMS TJERK HIDDES NETHERLANDS A1 JULY 76-7 DEC 76 ' ' - - ' P- f f - f-W' -- - --- 1- f- .- w:-:.,.,----L---,X-.- - .f .Q-mA..,,-.----,..-nf. ...1..,-., -,-L ,- - ...,-.,- ,, --Nh.-.4,,..,3,.,..,.,v.-1. ,:,,.,,,,,.,,,,v,Z W, ,VW PNS CORREA PORTUGAL 1 JULY 76-24 SEPT 1 76 HMCS OTTCWA CANADA 24 SEPT 76-7 DEC 76 l FGS FRANKENLAND GERMANY 1 JULY 76-24 SEPT 76 . ,. In August, it was reported a Soviet task Force consisting of several destroyers and a cruiser escorting the newest addition to the Soviet fleet, the Aircraft Carrier KIEV, were conducting operations in the North Sea. Our squadron was detached by SACLANT, QSupreme Allied Commander Atlanticj, from our routine exercises in order to observe KIEV in operation. Being the first of her class, KIEV attracted great interest from the other countries of the world. TRUETT,S role was to gather as much information as possible during our brief encounter with the KIEV. The successful launching and operation of the 'KIEV is a major advancement in Soviet Naval Power. Victory I Tower of London Magid. WWW . They stand watches just like we do. Tower Bridge Greenwich England was our first port visit and served a two-fold purpose. First, as an in- teresting and educational port of call. England is a country steeped in history and tradition. Greenwich is a short distance from the city of London with its numerous sights, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Parliment to mention a few. Also many modern nightclubs, shopping centers and theatres. Second, as a Bicentennal Visit. This being our nations bicentennal birthday, our visit was an important part of that celebration. The people of England greeted us with signs and banners. Truett was visited by the US Ambassidor to England, the Mayor of Greenwich and several other dignitaries. The Thames Trafalgar Square , , , Big Ben P1cad1lly C1rcus The new and the old Look - they named a ship after the Scotch! Ponta Delgada, Azores On our way to join STANAVFORLANT in Kiel Germany, we made two fuel stops. First in Bermuda, even though we weren't there long enough to go ashore we saw some of the country side. Our second stop was in the Azores. Truett continued on to Greenwich England for our Bicentennial visit. After departing England, we transited the Kiel Canal. Our stay in Kiel Ger- many was a time marked by hard work, meeting new friends, and hard play. The squadron helped us celebrate the 4th of July with a picnic and sports olympiad. ORW Y OSLO On a cruise such as this it's hard to say which port was the best. But in the final evalua- tion, Norway would have to rank in the top few. Norway is the land of the Viking, and throughout Norway you can see evidence of this. There are many museums with artifacts of the Viking way of life. The people have a pride in their country which is evident in the way they live, their art, their dress and the way they deal with visitors to their country. --..-.,.--. Mfg.,-,-,.., - pm.: ,-,.:. When you think of Scotland, you think of bagpipes, old castles, the Highland Games, red hair and whiskey.
