The Olympic Committe later stated that it would comply with President Carter's request to boycott the summer games. November 2nd, 1979 the U.S. Embassy was overrun by Iranian students who were angered by the U.S. accepting the deposed Shah of Iran for medical treatment, lt was first thought that 50 hostages were there. It was later discovered that six members of the Embassy Staff were smuggled out of Iran by the Canadian government Negotations for the release of the captives continued, and it was thought that they would be released as soon as a committee to investigate the Shah's activities was formed. It was later learned, however, that they wouldn't be released until the committee had completed the investigation.
