Troy State and Pike County - Lying among the rolling hills of Southeastern Ala- bama, the city of Troy is the epitome of Southern culture. Elegant pre-Civil War man- sions line Murphrey and Col- lege streets and the down- town square, which is a hub for local business, character- izes the traditional small Southern town. The community ' s pio- neer spirit has played a ma- jor role in Pike County ' s tran- sition from a farming community to one of indus- trialization. In the 1880 ' s, when Troy was selected, along with four towns in Ala- bama, to be the cite for a nor- mal school, the foundation was laid for building a pros- perous community and uni- versity. Over the past century, the community and the universi- ty have built a strong rela- tionship and both have pros- pered as a result. In the 1980 ' s, with 547 employees on the main campus and close to 4,000 students, Troy State University plays an im- portant role in the economic well being of Pike County. Plus, the university attracts business to the area. Accord- ing to United States Cham- ber of Commerce statistics, TSU generates a 5.47 percent increase in retail establish- ments, reflecting $3,090,550 in annual retail sales pur- chased from area merchants. This is just one example of the many economical bene- fits TSU provides the com- munity. Likewise, the community supports TSU in a number of ways. Support of the univer- sity ' s athletics, Homecoming qltxt IB ' rrrjr activities, drama productions and the multitude of Cen- tennial events during 1986- 87 is characteristic of the community ' s involvement in TSU. Moreover, some 300 students are employed in lo- cal businesses, providing funds that many students could not get by without. The university and com- munity have worked hand in hand to make Troy State Uni- versity a haven for educa- tional opportunities and Pike County a center for econom- ic growth. A YEAR OF TRIUMPH TRAGEDY AND SCANDAL The academic year 1986- 87 was filled with many trag- edies and triumphs, both of national and local interest. Lake Nios in Cameroon spewed a cloud of deadly gas killing more than 1700 peo- ple in Central Africa. The cause was believed to be car- bon dioxide, carbon monox- ide, hydrogen sulfide or cya- nide which had shot up from the bottom of the lake, a small pool nestled in a vol- canic crater in Nortwestern Cameroon. In South Africa, the fight to end apartheid heated up. In the United States, corpora- tions began pulling out of South Africa after protest by stock holders, while the U.S. government was pressured into levying economic sanc- tions against the South Afri- can Government. The new elections brought in politicians who were pro- aparthied, causing the situa- tion to become worse. In the Philippines, Presi- dent Corazan Aquino proved again she was a wom- an to be reckoned with. In a speech before a joint session of the US Congress, she won the hearts of the American government and later the praises of Reagan. Once back home, she had to deal with an attempted coup by mem- bers of her military forces still loyal to the ousted dictator Marcus. Her defense minis- ter, whom she had been feuding with over political policy, quickly came to her aid and put down the at- tempted coup. Again, show- ing that the lady with the yel- low rose is still the best bet for the Philippine people. THE BIG CHILL How Heterosexuals Are ( oping with A 1 DS In Iceland, President Rea- gan and Mikhail Gorbachev renewed their one-on-one dialogue at the hastily called preparatory summit meet- ing. The impromptu summit ended in a frustrating stale- mate because the develop- ment of the Star Wars de- fense system was an issue in which they could not reach a mutual agreement. In the United States, AIDS, the big disease with the little name, as it is called in Prince ' s hit record Sign of the Times , became the most contraversial moral and po- litical issue of the year. Sur- gean General C. Everett Koop released a 36 page re- port on AIDS. In the report he suggested open and graphic education programs on the disease, its cause and ways to prevent from con- tracting the disease. This was a very contraversial idea for a conservative administration, which had spent the past years ignoring the issue. Sur- geon General Koop contin- ued fighting for his educa- tion program. However, AIDS continued to spread across the nation with no hope for a cure in sight. Patrick Sherrill, in a 10 minute bloodbath, killed 14 co-workers and finally him- self in Edmond, Oklahoma. In the blink of an eye, Ed- mond had suddenly become the scene of the third largest mass murder in U.S. History. The heroic quest of a plane named Voyager became headlines as Dick Ruthan and Jeana Yeager made aviation history when they flew the Voyager, a light weight twin engine plane 26,000 miles around the world without landing or refueling. The Voyager will be placed in the Smithsonian alongside such ions of airborne adventure as the Spir it of St. Louis and Yeager ' s Bell X-1, the first plane to break the sound barrier.
