TOWN MLLTING Virginia Merrill, 1951 During town meeting there were many articles discussed and voted on. There wasn't much discussion on anything until it came to Article XIV, the water problem. This was discussed for over forty minutes. The Budget Committee estimated Gl42,000 would be needed for the new water main Mr Johnson, a construction engineer said the job could be done for S92 OOO. It was finally voted, after many arguments, to appropriate QlO0,000 for the new water system The next big problem was Article IX in the School Warrant This was the question of whether or not the high school would be discontinued, and the students sent to Keene This was discussed about an hour Mr Woodbury talked a long time on wny we should be sent There were very few who backed up his arguments On the other side, to keep the school, Dr Paul gave many wise suggestions Ho was backed up by Calvin Cummings, Roger bmith, Bob Duprey, and many others It was pointed out that the morale of the school children would be broken and that, if forced to go to Keene, there would be many who would quit or play hookey Dr Paul suggested that our large attic would make at least two, if not four classrooms, and the downstairs of the Town Hall could be used as a first grade classroom This would also prevent the small children from walking down School Street on cold davs It was voted that the school be kept and some arrangements be made to construct a temporary building or to fix the attic Dr Paul also suggested a conmittee of three persons to help the School Board decide on some definite arrange ments to nake more room There is no need to say that the hi h school students were very happy about the decision of the townspeople and appreciated it verr much I'm sure Dr Paul and Calvin Cummings will find themselves very popular with the high school students Harry G ' hy ar nowflak s d ncingo rev r Th 'r go ting r ady for th snowball'N h h s l ft foot, nd t ps with his right foot H Jim a do s o with his handsvu Tony Hu holds his ears Irving 'Mhat do you think of your n w tc cher now that she ith your class for a month9n Charles HFrom th looks of my gr du card, I don't think she news her A B C's All I g t are D's and F's The Judg said Ulf this tri l is interrupt d by anybody, he l be thrown out of this courtrofm Th prison r y ll d ' oray for Judgc'N 0 1 0 3 5 , ,V ' 0 - . . .
