Through communicating their knowledge or skills they enrich stu- dents in studies and in everyday life. They have proved that they are lead- ers. Many changes occurred in THS. The offices of superintendent and principal were combined. The com- bined office position was occupied by Mr. Kenneth Pharr. The office was enlarged, and Mrs. Nell Larzel- ere was moved to the high school office. Mrs. Mariam Thomas, secre- tary for the past four years, resigned to take employment at the Troy Courthouse. Her replacement was Mrs. Gail Clary. U.S.D. 429 also introduced many new teachers. Mrs. Debra Wilke. Pep Club sponsor, and art teacher: Mr. Jerry Huff, band director. Miss Donna Nichols. Mr. Frank Davis, and Mr. Kent Brown, athletic coaches: Mrs. Sherry Deaton, librar- ian and government teacher: Miss Cheryl Schreiber. special education teacher. This was also to be the last year for Mr. William Foster to teach in the THS system. After eleven years as science teacher, he resigned to con- tinue his education. Several classrooms were carpeted: the halls received a new application of paint for the first of the school year. The girls' rest room facilities in the lower hall were remodeled, and a new lunch program was started. Mariam lakes time out for a laugh before starting another busy day at the office. Nell i busy helping Gail with her work. Mr. Pharr Comments on Year We are indeed fortunate to be living today in the greatest free country in the world. Our land is blessed with great opportunities for the individual to assert his initiative. Here is the hope that you will take full advantage of those opportunities. Each year a record of activities and groups are combined in book form to remind us of what has passed. We must always look to the future but never forget the good experiences of the past. This record should be a reminder that we had a small part in the lives of all of those around us. To gain our education, our curriculum includes the many personal contacts in activities as well as classrooms. We must be ever mindful that to be a success we must be a part of our society. A well- rounded education must include many parts in order to face the chal- lenges of life. To the yearbook staff and sponsor. Mrs. Martha Rockey. a great deal of credit should be given for providing this fine pictorial record of the 1977- 78 school year. This year will be a constant reminder of our opportunities and our many responsibilities. Mr. Pharr Foculty 9 Board members arc Mr. Speaks. Mr Fenley. Mr Weber. Mr. Greaser. The chorus received a III rating. “I was very pleased with the performance given by the Troy High School choir at state music contest. It was the best performance the choir has done this year. The rating which we received cannot show the improve- ment that the choir had made since the first of the year. My hopes are. that improvement continues and that we can have as good, if not better, performance at the spring concert on May 16, as we did at state music contest,” stated Mr. Jerry Huff. The choir was outfitted with royal blue choir robes. Y SOLOISTS: L. McKiltnck and R. Baugh- man. Front Row: T. Simpson. B. Puckett, B Marriott, S. Schollz. T. Clary. M. Lara, R. Baughman, V. The library was reorganized for easy location of material; a stereo that included a casette, 8-track tape player, turntable and AM- FM radio, and headphones, also was added to make a listening center for student group use and private listening. A sound film- strip machine was purchased. Recycling of newspapers added extra money to the budget, and seventy-five new paper and hard- back books were added. These were just a few of the improve- ments that were made. Quill and Scroll New Members Quill and Scroll Charter is granted to a school, not just to a publication's staff. Quill and Scroll is an International Honorary Society for High School Journalists. It was organized April 10, 1926. by a group of high school advisors for the purpose of encouraging and rewarding individual achievements in journalism and allied fields. The season started with a big showing of fourteen people, but had to be reduced to a squad of six in order to form a varsity team. Those w ho played on the varsity team were as follows: Scott Davis, Steve Tetlow. Jason Yingling. Glen Grable, Greg Dannevik and Jay Jarrett. Coaching the team was Mr. Frank Davis. His main objectives were to teach tennis and make sure everybody improved his game. Out of six matches played. Troy won one. but that was no indication of the personal accomplishments of the season. Head Coach Kent Brown observes Looking hack on the 1977 Trojan Football Season, many thoughts come intently, to mind. I don't think a coach could ask for a better bunch of guys to work with, which includes our assistant coaches. Of course, all games are special occasions, but none will surpass the events that took place on our first victory. What a night! I don’t think I've had a belter feeling in my athletic life. Besides winning a trophy for second place in the K-36 league, the thing that makes me happiest, was in our second league loss, our team fought back to win the next week. To me there are many hidden values in football and fighting back is one of the utmost. As all other people starting their careers do. I had many reservations, one which was whether, what I had trained for in college would be what I wanted. Though I still have a ton of knowledge to learn. I plan and hope to coach for a long while. All in all. the Troy football team, with several ups and dow ns, had a good season. And as the underclassmen and myself prepare and plan, the next season will be even better. In so doing, they have established a standard for which future teams should aim; that is. they improved their record in each year they participated.
