Editor Reflects on Year As I look back over the school year, it has been a year to remember forever. Though we didn't rank first in all areas, we were FIRST in the hearts of all Trojans. 1 would like to thank everyone on the staff and especially Mrs. Rockey. Without everyone working together, it would not have been possible to capture the 1976-1977 school year in this book. It is our hope that we have captured those precious moments of the year for those moments are now gone forever. 1977 TROJAN Editor, Christine McClelland Poge 3 Christine McClelland works on a layout. Jim Weidmaier, Steve Tetlow. Eric Jorgensen. Coach Foster. C-C Harriers Rewarded When attempting to evaluate an athletic season, coaches often get caught up in measuring and discussing certain aspects of sports, success and failure. Too often success and failure are determined in the evaluator’s mind by plotting victory against defeat. The 1976 Trojan harrier season was an enjoyable and rewarding time for the coach. New acquaintances were made and friendships were established and renewed. Perhaps the best result of the 1976 season lies in the fact that the individual was given an opportunity to realize that what he will get out of athletics will be in direct proportion to what he is willing to put into it. In this sense, the people involved in the sport of cross country were presented with an opportunity for individual evaluation and growth. Running is fun, as well as rewarding. Page 51 Trojan Football Improves ,4 The Trojans ended the 1976 season with a very rewarding 5 and 4 record. I think this season truly characterized the Trojan Spirit. The Ball team was composed of many young players with little varsity experience, which under the leadership of seven seniors, came through a schedule that saw the Trojans play the League leaders: Highland, Wathena, Jackson Heights, in successive Friday nights. The tough schedule, which included two state play-off teams, coupled with many injuries to starting players, caused a shift in playing responsibility to younger players and players who had not seen action at a position other than the one they played the week before. Each week they came back to play to the best of their ability and finished with a fine season. It was meant that each of us be tested in life, but the sign of maturity is not always in the one who won or lost, but how each of us rebounds and grows from those tests for future challenges. The 1976 Trojans accepted and grew from those experiences of the 1976 football season. - Coach Tom Smith Poge 52 f e ft Sjff6 ar tio iĀ ojiis iojiis ,,Tr4Ā«? iĀ®pjĀ Ā $ r U 5 tV 74 1 o V t V.Q TDDJ««S , °iW,s T jHIS A jiĀ«s VOjl S I'GJiK? The 1976 season was a year of ups and downs. Injuries played a big part of it, with our young players getting a great deal of experience. This year the defense did a great job of blending with the offense and putting on a great show. There were 16 returning seniors, 12 returning juniors, and 8 good returning sophomores. I’m very proud of them and think they should be on the top next year. - Coach Lila Schuman Page 65 Ajinoej Progress Made at THS One of the best years has been completed at Troy schools. An immense amount of work, accomplishment and school spirit was evident from students, teachers, parents and administrators. Long-range plans were formulated for year-long projects. Many students expressed positive attitudes in their daily work and activities. Continued support of this same spirit from Troy patrons was always a welcome supplement to every part of the school functions. It would be fascinating to predict the outcome of education if all students could be exposed to all types of programs during their twelve or so years in public education. The reality is that no one organization can provide such a range. All educational units are certain to select priority programs which will best meet the needs of those it serves. The schools that we work with are no exception. Our program priorities must be viewed, not with skepticism or personal bias, with prudent evaluation, projection, understanding and planning. Our school system has been fortunate to maintain various athletic contests, field trips and extra curricular activities, as well as other vital educational programs and cuniculum. Future planning must indicate which programs will need to be changed. Our dynamic school is a busy organization. Daily bulletins contained such key words as field trip, membership drive, sign-up, need your help, soap scrimmage, meeting, practice, committee chairman, FFA contest, students win honors, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, class pictures, pep assembly, victory last night, conference a success, play rehearsal, Trojans host tonight and donkey ballgame. Some of the activities and groups involved were Pep Club, classes, play production, annual staff, student council, Kayettes, government day, college interviews, publications class, parent-teacher conferences and land judging. Each of our students and faculty members is to be commended for the progress that has been made in establishing a purposeful and consistent year. We have much to be proud of and build upon in the future. Bud Pennington, Superintendent Dr. Bud Pennington, superintendent, and Mrs. Nell Larzelcrc, secretary, work on daily reports. Page 68 Dr. Pennington to Troy The new superintendent for the Troy School system was Dr. Bud Pennington. Dr. Pennington was superintendent of schools at Brule, Nebraska, before coming to Troy. Dr. Pennington has started a series of new committees, including evaluation and curriculum committees. Dr. Pennington holds a B.S. in Chemistry Education from Central State University; a Masters Degree in Secondary Supervision from Stephen F. Austin State University; and a Ph. D. in Administration and Supervision from Kansas University. From 1970 to 1973, Dr. Pennington was Assistant to the Dean at Kansas University. Dr. Pennington assumed superintendent duties July 1. Dr. Pennington said, Troy is small enough to be close knit, but large enough to have a variety of things to get interested in. Beneficial Programs Built Operating under a highly accountable budget, the district board has been able to retain constant forward motion in several programs. Beneficial programs such as vocational education, bus purchase, guidance and testing, Upward Bound Program, new speech therapy services, students teach, field trips, innovative English curriculum, curriculum update, evaluation and policy revisions, new tennis court construction and remodeling of selected high school rooms, gym floor resurfacing, administration of school grants for Title I, Title IV and Lunch Program equipment, and various activities have been built, revised and or continued through the constant effort of many progress- minded students, teachers, staff, administrators, school board members and patrons who worked together toward effective first class education. Mt. Norman Davies with V.P. Archie Fenley. Jr. The direction and clarity of goals, programs and high standards from which all Troy students may benefit are consistently being improved. The following criteria are generally used for an occupation to be considered a profession: (1) it requires high skill and intellectual effect; (2) it requires extensive formal education; (3) it involves primarily the exchange of service or advice rather than the scale of goods for profits: (4) it has acquired traditions of group dignity and recognition by others. There is no question that public school teaching is a profession and professional faculty members abound at Troy’s schools. Looking ahead, it can also be visualized that new programs and commitments will be necessary. Curriculum and staff development will be considered and improved. School Board continued . . . School Board continued . . . Mi. Jerral Weber works with Mr. Raymond Gaul. Bud Pennington, Superintendent Page 69 Principal Believes in Keeping Traditions Mrs. Mariam Thomas, secretary, has another busy day. Once again I want to thank the yearbook staff for the opportunity to record statements in THE TROJAN. First, congratulations to those students and staff members who have spent long hours producing the 1977 yearbook. Second, it is important to carry on traditions which inspire unity, enthusiasm, and productivity. That the staff has worked to bring excellence is a fact. I want to say thanks to the student body, certified and non-certified personnel who have worked together to produce this year's traditions. It has been the intention of many to encourage a positive approach in athletics, academics, and activities. Also, may the education everyone has acquired through formal and informal training serve as a foundation to establish new goals and ambitions. As one educator put it: All learning is an invitation. We hope the experiences each person has had in one year or four at Troy High School are invitations to greater benefits, greater challenges, and greater fulfillment. May each person listen to the invitations to become equipped for tomorrow's world. Finally, 1 would like to wish each of you the best of luck as you continue the many endeavors that life and your school offer.
