No. 429 of Troy, gave solid support to their schools by passing the first major school bond in almost fifty years. While for some school districts, a $700,000 school bond would not be considered a large issue, it was in- deed a major breakthrough for the Troy district and everyone who supported the issue and had an active part in getting the job done, should feel proud of this accomplishment. The 1974-75 school term has been a good one with very few problems. This is a tribute to students, par- ents and school personnel in working together to accomplish satisfactory results. I feel that we have one of the better school systems for our classification size and we can still make it even better by adding courses in Art and Vocational Educa- tion as soon as it becomes economically possible. Our athletic teams, musical organizations and speech drama groups have represented our school well this year. Our FT A teams have done very well in their contests and we are proud of the work and efforts of our Kayettes, Student Council, Pep Club and Cheer- leaders. Our newspaper and yearbook staffs have put in much time and effort to publish school events and we appreciate their fine work. On behalf of the board of education and myself, I extend our heartiest congratu- lations to all participants and sponsors. As we approach die end of our associations with the seniors, we commend them on a job well done and de- sire that they go on to become worthwhile citizens wherever they are. W. F. Wilson, Supt. This administrative change required adjustments on everyone's part. Mr. Cavanaugh instituted several new privileges for the students. He began an open lunch period with smoking allowed in the parking lot, and permitted seniors to leave after 4th hour. One of his new rules was that lunch tickets could only be bought during the last ten minutes of the first three hours. Even though students were disciplined strictly for cer- tain things it was mutually agreed that Mr. Cavanaugh handled things very well. The Troy Pep Club sponsored the dance and fur- nished refreshments of sandwiches and punch. Juniors Present . . . You Can't Take It With You You Can't Take It With You, a comedy in three acts by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, was presented by the junior class Nov. 21 and 22. Act I introduces the Sycamores who at first seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys. The plot shows how Tony, attractive young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore, and brings his par- ents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong even- ing. The shock sustained by the Kirbys, who are in- vited to eat cheap food, shows Alice that marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores, however, though sympathetic to Alice, find it hard to realize her point of view. Meantime, Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give her up, and in the end Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores, particularly since he happens to be there during a visit by an ex-Grand Duchess, earning her living as a waitress. No mention has at yet been made of the strange activ- ities of certain members of the household engaged in the manufacture of fireworks; nor of Rheba, the maid, and her friend Donald; nor of Grandpa's interview with the tax collector when he tells him he doesn't believe in the income tax. 36 Director Ms. Donna Leuzler readies Gaylon Merritt for the evening performance. Barnwarming Kindles Spirits! Janie Turpin was crowned Chapter Sweetheart at the 1974 Bamwarming sponsored by the Future Farmers of America, Dec. 6. David Elder, head escort, presented Janie with a lovely crown and an FFA jacket. Patty Neumann was selected runner-up. Each of the four at- tendants was presented with a gold charm with FFA inscribed. Mr. Lloyd Barnett, FFA sponsor, brought a new perspec- spective to the Sweetheart selection process. In pre- vious years the contestants only participated in judging events. This year, Mr. Barnett requested a theme from the contestants titled, Why I Would Like to be Chap- ter Sweetheart. As has been done in the past, contes- tants were judged on their proficiency in milking a cow into a pop bottle, catching a greased pig, and sawing a board in two. Judges were Mr. John Cava- naugh, Mr. Dale Whiteside, and Mr. Fred Folsche. Bob May, the Jocal disc jockey from KKJO, provided the records for the Sweetheart dance. Refreshments of doughnuts, cookies, and punch were served by the FFA. Mary Sanderson, Cathy Clary, Karen Adams, Queen Janie Turpin, Patty Neumann, Deb Reder, Sara Owens, and Ginny Whitsell. FFA President David Elder presents Queen Janie Turpin to her subjects. Patty, concentrate on milking, not on Steve Whittaker! 39 40 Trojan spirit was high at the Troy-Jackson Heights game Feb. 21, because the B-team was victorious and undefeated for the season. Between the B and A team games Mark Peden crowned Brenda Speaks the 1975 Queen of Courts in a standing-room-only crowd. At- tendants and their escorts for the evening were Brenda Speaks and Kenny Pierce, Marianne Reder and Mark Peden, Teresa Reder and Tim Goss, Cynthia Masters and David Elder, and Gail Koehler and Tony Clary. Crown and flower bearers were Sara Elder, Pam Clary, Mike Jamvold, and Tim Manning. Despite the A-team loss to the great Jackson Heights team, the school supported a record dance in the gym afterwards. Mr. Bob Young was the disc jockey for the evening. Left: Buffalo Bill replies, Kings don't handle money. Don't they give us a lot of loving cups? On April 18 and 19, the senior class presented Annie Get Your Gun, a comedy in three acts by Dorothy and Herbert Fields. Annie Oakley, shy and awkward, comes to the hotel to sell rabbits to the proprietor, but the proprietor is more interested in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, which is moving into her hotel. The irritated proprietor, after seeing Annie demonstrate her ability with a gun, has her accept Frank Butler's challenge. While she is wait- ing for the match to start, Frank Butler wanders in. Annie falls in love on the spot, but that does not stop her from beating Frank in the contest--to the amaze- ment of the crowd. However, Buffalo Bill, worried about competition from other shows, wants Annie to join their troupe. Frank, jealous of his standing as a star, insists that Annie be no more than his assistant. This suits Annie fine, for she is so in love with Frank she goes limp every’ time she looks at him. Frank finds himself falling in love with Annie, too. Buffalo Bill needs something new to catch the public's fancy and decides to give Annie a spectacular stunt—to make her the star. She expects Frank to rush backstage after the stunt and propose. Instead he is outraged. He writes her that he is leaving. Both Frank and Annie are miser- able, and their separate shows are both having financial trouble. Other members of the troupe try to get them back together again. But the old argument bursts out once more--who is the best shot. They decide tc shoot it out once and for all. Annie throws the match and wins Frank's love. Annie: Am I an Indian yit7 Sitting Bull: Almost. Many mothers and alumni attended, including a former student who brought her home economics class from Washington, Kansas. The decorations were borrowed from the junior class and created the atmosphere of a lawn party. This was Mrs. Goss's 25th style show at Troy High School, and to add a touch of elegance to the show she had two of her former students model the wed- ding dresses they had made for their weddings. 48 Melody Merritt gives Mrs. Goss flowers from all the home economics girls. Trojans On The Field Coaches Commend Players Coach Tom Smith and Coach Ron Tuley both thought the 1974, 8-1 season, was one of the best. We got out of the team what they were capable of, replied Coach Smith. Defensive Coach Tuley said, Defense was as good as in the past; offense lacked a little spark. Many say that seniors had the best attitude of the team, but the sophomores' ability threatened the seniors, were Coach Smith's words. Coach Tuley commented, We have enough talent in the sophomore and junior class to have another great year. 57 THS Offensive Records GAME RESULTS WE THEY Jefferson Co. Tony Clary: It was the best season I've ever played for offense and defense both. My main goal was to make All-Area again this year, which I did. David Elder: Great! I enjoyed myself more than any other season. I didn't accomplish my goal; I wanted to go to State. I felt I was lucky to be able to play on a winning team. Kelly Franken: My goal was to win the league and go to State. We just missed by one game. Tim Goss: I did a lot better than I thought I was going to, and I had a lot of fun because I got to play with all my friends. I accomplished one of my goals, which was to make All-League. Rick Kostman: I had a lot of fun. I had a goal to be a starter and I made it. I think we could have won them all instead of losing to Highland. Dick Masters: rtWe had a better season than anybody thought we would. I think we should have beaten Highland, though. I was trying to make All-League and was trying to help the team go to State, but it didn't. Marie Peden: I was a little disappointed because I didn't start at fullback. As a whole, I enjoyed the season except for the Highland game. Kenny Pierce: We had a good season. I got to start, and had a lot of fun. George Smith: We all had a lot of fun. I think we got a big letdown from Highland, because I didn't think we were quite ready. But we were ready after that; we learned something. I'm gonna miss it! Harriers Highly Improved Ken Pierce, Steve Tetlow, Jerry Johnson, John Bascom, Tim Goss, and Dan Staudenmaier The cross-country team had the most outstanding year ever in Trojan history'. The six runners worked hard and showed spirit and improvement. It was a new experience for Troy when they' held the first Troy Cross-Country Invitational Meet, Oct 5. The Trojan team was victorious over teams from High- land, Wathena, and Savior of the World in the meet at the Troy fair grounds. Despite heavey' rains, the THS band and many Trojan fans were present to cheer the team on to a victory. In the K-36 League Meet held in Horton, Oct. 19, Troy took second place, losing only to Centralia. Tim Goss led the Trojan runners by placing third. Jerry' Johnson was next for the team, running in seventh place. John Bascom came in fifteenth, and K n Pierce and Steve Tetlow finished eighteenth and nineteenth respectively. Dan Staudenmaier, the remaining Trojan runner, was unable to attend the meet. One reason the Trojans had a strong season was because of summer long distance running. Tim Goss, John Bascom, and Steve Tetlow were all in honorary run- ning clubs. In three y'ears Tim and John ran 1,500 miles, and this last summer Steve ran 500 miles. This takes much diligence and stamina. 61 THS CC Stats Fastest 1974 Times Tim Goss 10:42 Jerry Johnson 10:54 John Bascorn 11:16 Dan Staudenmaier 11:27 Ken Pierce 11:50 Steve Tetlow 11:50 THS Cross Country Records School Garold Davies 1971 10:20 Senior Garold Davies 1971 10:20 Junior Garold Davies 1970 10:38 Sophomore Tim Goss 1972 10:54 Freshman Dan Staudenmaier 1971 11:30 Medal Winners 6 Tim Goss 5 Jerry Johnson 3 John Bascom 1 Ken Pierce 1 Dan Staudenmaier Fastest Cross Country Team Time 55:33 Garold Davies Senior Floyd Cross Sophomore Tim Culp Sophomore Jerry Goins Sophomore Tom Dean Senior Placings in Meets Wamego 7th Savior of the World 3rd Troy 1st Riley County 7th Hiawatha 3rd K-36 League 2nd Regional 8th V e A V35 i Steve Tetlow pins number on Ken Pierce's jersey as they wait for the race to begin. Superior Students Honored National Honor Society is an organization designed to recognize the all around superior students. This society is based on the four principles of scholarship, leader- ship, service, and character. For membership a student must qualify by having a 3.0 (B) average. Leadership, school and community service, as well as the character of each student, were taken into consideration by fac- ulty, who made the selection. The following nine seniors were selected as the 1975 National Honor Society: Dan Staudenmaier, Connie McClelland, Martha Huss, Cynthia Masters, Melody Merritt, Patty Megown, Joyce Callahan, Cindy Mur- phy, Jeanette Aberle, Tim Goss, and Bob Wiedmaier. These members were initiated into the organization during a candle light service traditionally held during the Senior High Awards Program. THS Honor Society of 1974-75 bought honor cords which they wore on their gowns at graduation. StuCo Works For School Spirit StuCo for THS was led by Pres. Tim Goss and staff. Student Council helped make THS a better place for the students and faculty by sponsoring school activities to stimulate school unity. StuCo conducted elections for Homecoming, Queen of Courts, and Student Council, as is traditional. Main- taining the pop machine was the main money-making project. StuCo sponsored Spirit Week during Homecoming Week which included The 50’s Day. Pre-game Homecoming ceremonies and the dance following the game were also organized by StuCo. Sponsors were Coaches Tom Smith and Ron Tuley. The main purpose of the organization was to sponsor the Athletic Banquet, held Monday, May 12, in the school gymnasium. The evening began with a catered supper. Following the meal was a short talk by guest speaker, Mr. Charles Richards, the new head football and track coach at HCJC. His talk was followed by the presentation of awards earned by both the junior and senior high school athletes. Because of the many awards to be presented, the banquet lasted until 11 p. m. Several special awards given included a plaque the cioss-country team presented to Coach Bill Foster. Roger Drake was awarded the Tom Keller Award, and Tim Goss and David Elder received the Tiojan Ath- letes of the Year plaques. Though the banquet was long, it was highlighted by a collection of jokes and recollections from the past athletic year. 85 Trojans Boost Teams The Trojan Pep Club, with 33 members and 8 cheer- leaders, had a spirited season under the direction of Miss Lila Schuman and Mrs. Helen Luedke. Selling Trojan pins during Homecoming week was the main money-making project. Profits from this project were then used to sponsor the Homecoming dance Oct. 11. This year the Trojans changed their style by adding new outfits for basketball season, blue shorts under white slitted skirts. Members had to wear appropriate uniform to all games, and were only allowed six ex- cused absences. The group cheered as a whole for the football season and as separ- ate squads during A-team and B-team basketball games. Library Course Added Library Science was new to the curriculum this year. Students taking the mini course learned to file cards, write biographies, check out books for students, and replace returned books on shelves. The course earned students one-fourth credit, while each library aide earned a full credit for the year's work. Miss Janet Guier was the supervisor and instructor for the course. FRONT ROW: Miss Janet Guier, Cindy Murphy, Rita Gray, Mindy Larzele re, Ginny Whit sell, SECOND ROW: Debbie Adams, Gail Koehler, Becky Beaty, David Sanderson, Elizabeth Jeschke, Dawn Johnson and Sheila Hoffman. STANDING: Cindy Murphy, Rita Gray, Robin Sallee, Melody Merrit, Deb Reder, Sharon Duncan, and Joyce Callahan. Cadets Experience Teaching A new mini course offered this year was Cadet Teach- ing. Cadet teachers were given their choice of special or elementary education. They helped regular teachers by grading papers, making bulletin boards, and help- ing the students with their assignments. Although a few complained of having to walk to the grade school, most enjoyed the cadet teaching experience, for which each received one-fourth credit. Kayettes Work For Curtains The Kayettes were busy this year collecting labels and selling candy bars to raise money for new stage cur- 1 tains. They also had a chili supper, which made $185. A first for the Troy Kayettes was having a Kayette can- didate for Area President. Their candidate was Elaine Staudenmaier. Their campaign, complete with theme song, helped their candidate win the election. The girls put on a program for Christmas, A Trip Around the World at Christmas, in which each girl took part. Christmas customs from various countries were depicted. It was not all work for the girls. They had parties, and a contest for Miss Blabbermouth and Mr. Irresistible. Elaine Staudenmaier and Randy Duncan were the win- ners. The work the Kayettes did this year was excellent. It proved that this generation cares about others, as dem- onstrated in their participation in the CROP drive and in school service projects. ROW 1: T. Winkel, P. Culp, D. Duncan, D. Adams, L.
