Michael Weakley Tells It Like It I In His Native Language A lot of people have asked me why I became interested in becoming an exchange student. Since the age of I4 I had wanted to come to America as a teenager. So when a teacher asked me if I would be interested in going to America as an exchange student, I naturally said, Yes, And here I am. I applied to the organization called the International Christian Youth Exchange, run by various churches in New Zealand, by writing about myself, my family, and what I expected life to be like in America. They must have liked what I wrote because they were kind enough to select me. So before they could change their minds, I got my passport, told the American Embassy that I wasn't a Communist, and hopped on the nearest Americas bound plane. I did quite a bit of hopping because there are very tew America-bound planes in New Zealand. And here I am - for a year to stay. Since I have been here, I have really come to like many of the sincere aspects of American life. I think the main aspect I have come to like is the sincere search for more honest lives by some students. The boys are faced with the fact that sometime or other they may have to go fight a war. And a lot of them are really thinking, Should America be in the Vietnam war? The ones that do go and fight are very brave, and so, too, are the ones that are -convinced America should not be in the war and decide not to fight. Whatever their choice, I am glad I do not have to make that choice. The only criticism I have of your school system is that I feel the seniors should be treated more like college students in every aspect. The transition period between high school and college is hard and it is even harder without any high school preparation. Otherwise Troy High is the best school I have attended. Troy has so much valuable and helpful equipment lsuch as films and language labs? that are unheard of in New Zealand high schools, as well as a very good library. The main difference between Troy High School and mine is that there were no girls in my school. The only girl in my school was the librarian - and she was about 35 years old. Some people have asked me if I think that Troy students are restricted in any great way. Compared to New Zealand, no. In fact, a factor of American lite I have come to love is the freedom all have in most aspects of life. Americans are very lucky people. One thing that I have learned while being here, and have come to love, is that life is experiences one after another. When I go back to New Zealand, I hope to experience different occupa- tions. I hope to go to college, I hope to do T.V. work, I hope to work as a photographer, in short, I hope to do a lot of iobs because this is the only way I would really enioy life - and this I learned from America. U
