One of Jim Elifritz's many duties at Zwiebels includes sacking groceries during the rush. 22 Distributive Education l Distributive Education is a program concerned with teaching students the fundamentals of buying and sell- ing. Though the principles and theories of economics are taught, practical experience in dealing with the public is stressed. The student spends one-half day in the class- room studying subiects involved with his particular field of work, and the other half day on the iob gaining training and experience. The DE program is based on three factors: the teacher, who sets up the program in the school and communityg the employer, who gives valuable opportunities and advice to the studentp and the student himself, who uses the program and oppor- tunities to his best advantage. Kay Mikels and Billie Wagonrod discuss the importance of merchandise looking neat to appeal to customers.

Fine Arts Dennis Ransbottom BFA, Ohio University Indiana State College Indiana University M. Ed., Miami T. Herman Dooley Fine arts in Troy High covers three separate depart- ments. ln Speech, the students learn the fundamentals of a good speech, the various ways to prepare different types of speeches, and the rules of parliamentary procedure. Drama is more concerned with actual stage work, both in front and behind the scenes.. Stage design, construction, and co-ordina- tion of the physical factors of a production are stressed as strongly as motivation, movement, and delivery on the stage. Students in the field of art work learn how to use watercolors, mixed medium, polymer, oils, chalk, and ink to make sketches and fine detailed prints. The techniques of making clay models or busts are taught, as well as work with thread or wires. Students are encouraged to experiment in the use of various materials for their montage collages including magazines, newspaper, glue, and shellac. Music in both vocal and instrumental development is intensively studied. The marching band emphasizes fast moving music, while demonstrating graceful formations on the football field. The orchestra learns to play all forms of instrumental music, from Bach and Beethoven to Rodgers and Kern. The choirs, freshman, sophomore, and senior, perform during the year, in both student assemblies and public concerts. 21

Diversified Cooperative Trainin The D.C.T. program is the vocational part-time train- ing program for high school seniors who are bound for skilled areas of work, In this program, students spend one-half clay in classes studying subjects related to their iobs as well as other school subiects. The other half is spent with cooperating employers where the students receive on-the-job training. One student says, D.C.T. has been the most rewarding thing I've ever participated in. Another says, The D.C.T. program is one that is needed by all schools to help the people who are not particularly college-bound. lt helps one learn what it is like to work at a iob that really requires skill, lt also helps us, the students, realize that the community will bend over back- wards to help us face lite after we graduate. gi i ' N ,fx Larry Thompson and his employer discuss the intricacies of an outboard motor.
