Hustory of Troy Publuo Schools Troy s very early schools are not a matter of record and guvung an accurate hustory of them us duffucult The furst schools were pruvate schools under the durectuon of various teachers Wulluam Barbee who came to the Troy area un 1804 was the furst teacher and evidently dud hus teaching un varuous homes of hus pupuls ln 1813 1814 Samuel Kyle taught a pruvate school of twelve or fifteen pupuls un a log house at the corner of Market and Water Streets ln 1816 John G Clark taught un the lower part of town near the old railroad depot Various other schools were conducted un the Episcopal Baptust and Presbyterian churches and at one tame a Muss Mary Barney taught a fune select school for gurls The schools were supported by varuous factuons un the cornmunuty and the anumosutues of the parents were frequently shared by the chuldren An academy small one room school buult and supported by publuc subscruptuon existed for a time about 1826 on the sute of the present Edwards School Such were the humble begunnungs of the present publuc school system In 1849 the Ohio Legislature passed a law p rmuttung a community to elect a board of edu catuon to have charge of all school matters ln June of that year the furst elected board of education began to function The members of that furst board were Charles Morrus Danuel Ruce Benuamun F Powers Wulluam B Johnson Zacharuoh Ruley and Henry S Mayo The Troy Board of Educatuon has always had as uts members men and women of unusual leader shup splendid educational traunung and sound business judgment and the confidence of the publuc un the school system has been due un large measure to the type of people who have served so ably as members of the Board The 1956 Board members are Frank C Mon tross president Leo H Faust vuce president GuyS Frusbue E K Butterfueld Wulluam Jack son and Mary E Wunner clerk The development of the Troy Schools buuldung program began when the cutuzens voted S6 000 to erect a school house on the sute of the present Edwards Buuldung Later S2 500 was necessary to complete ut Thus buuldung was condemned un 1892 and replaced by the present structure at a cost of S40 000 The furst Forest Buuldung costung S10 000 was built un 1874 the present Forest un 1905 the New Forest Grade School un 1949 at a cost of buned cost S62 500 It was replaced un 1950 by a new Kyle Grade School costung S420 000 ln 1874 the Board of Education erected a school buuldung for the colored youth of the com munity lt had one large room and a recutatuon room and enrolled nearly seventy pupuls A few years later the Arnett Bull admitted colored children to the regular grades un theur dustructs and abolished the separate school The next step un the buuldung program was the erectuon of the Van Cleve Hugh School 1914 The total cost of the hugh school was S155 000 ln 1931 the Van Cleve Audutoruum costung S118 000 was added to the hugh school and un 1949 the Arts and lndustrues Buuld ung completed the present hugh school ln 1931 the Heywood Grade School was erected at a cost of approximately S190 000 ln 1955 the Concord School Dustruct merged wuth the Troy Schools and added the splendid faculutues of the Concord system ln November 1955 the cutuzens of Troy passed a bond us sue for the erectuon of a new hugh school wuth an elementary wung on Meredith Heights overlooking the Troy Memorual Staduum Thus new buuldung costung appraxumately S3 000 000 wull be erected wuthun the next two years and wull complete an extensuve buuldung program carrued on durung the past few years From very humble begunnungs over a cen tury ago Troy Schools have come to theur present splendid system Eleven superuntendents have devotedly served the Troy Public Schools the furst one beung Wulluam N Edwards of Dayton Succeedung superuntendents were as follows Name Date Name Date H A Thompson 1867 1871 C L Van Cleve 1884 1902 L V Ferrus 871 1874 R M Brown 1902 1906 H P Ufford 1874 1875 Charles W Cookson 1906 1919 JohnW Doud 1875 1880 T E Hook 1919 1947 J F McCaskey 1880 1884 Glenn B Jeffers 1947 to 9 P ge Fou I 1 1 1 I I I - I . . . . . , . . 1 . 1 1 1 I I 1 I , 1 1 1 1 I 1 1 1 ' 1 ll I ll . 1 1 1 1 I 1 I O 1 I 1 1 I , . . .
