Since its beginning, America has strived to reach high goals. This ambition led to the struggle for independence from England and the creation of a new democracy. This major accomplishment established the spirit of achievement which was to be carried on throughout U,S. history. The formation of the Constitution and the subsequent organization of the new government, the installation of the Bill of Rights which guaranteed certain inalienable rights, the further pioneering and civilizing of new territory, a vast system of transportation and the continuing advancements in technology, are all just a few examples of great American achievements. Because of this solid foundation of accomplishments, America ' s spirit of achievement Is certain to continue in the future. SPIRITED GOALS FOR TODAY c ' ttNi,;; THOWKS F ERHAO Each person needs to have goalsX even if they are but private djeanre- to be locked in the crevice f one j mind. During our high sphooi days, we learn to cultivate th means by which we can release tNpse dreams and make them a reality. As warriors we travel together-onjhe path leading us to graduation are united in this single effort, but it is only one of many accomplishments we will live to experience. As we separate and find new directions to our lives, the V spirit of achievement will cbntinues_X to grow and give meaning to our i Vj existence. , m f .X « V 0 .X C xV ' A L .r V S3 nV r GROUP ACHIEVEMENT I Many organized groups of people have a definite set of goals and ideals that require a unified spirit of achievement. Whether it be to make a product, further a talent, promote a cause, or provide leadership, an organization has goals that must be achieved. For a group to successfully reach its goals, it requires individuals writhin that group to work together under one combined effort to attain these objectives. AN INDIVIDUAL STRIVES FOR GOALS Let us then be up and doing. With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing. Learn to labor and to wait. LONGFELLOW While a large organization or club may require members to work together to achieve, each and every individual within that group has a set of goals and hopes to achieve for himself. Throughout life, these individual achievements help to further the process of attaining success and reaching even higher goals for the individual. Many times one ' s goals are temporarily thwarted by one of Life ' s- numerous obstacles, but once a person overcomes this difficulty, the spirit of achievement gains momentum and the individual ' s ambitions are once again restored. 11 STUDENT LIFE ,x - f Vrf -. ■' ll The spirit of achievement was reflected in all facets of student life. Behind every dance, assembly, and activity was a lot of imagination, planning, and hard work. Although often met with misfortune and discouragement, these people continued in their efforts and displayed the true spirit of achievement. TROY ' S BICENTENNIAL DEAU AND BELLES . J N ' A. Their objective was to improve communication between students, faculty and administration. During the year, the council discussed and took action on several subjects. Among them were smoking, litter control, and policy regarding library use. A possible student center was considered, to encourage student productivity. The council decided that without facilities and money, this would be impractical. As an alternative, they suggested organized games and other activities during the free period day. Many times she may practice long hours after school. When she arrives home, she barely has time for both chores and homework. But she manages well. The cheerleader has many games to cheer at and many posters to paint. She has pep assemblies to plan and outfits to order. But most important, she has energy and spirit; this singles her out as a cheerleader, a leader and representative of her school. CHEERS TEAMS TO VICTORY The Junior Varsity Cheerleader has two objectives The main objective IS to provide leadership and support for the junior varsity sports activities The other is to confirm her interest in this activity and improve skills in preparation of other leadership activities, such as Song or Yell The J V Cheerleaders, this year, showed spirit and enthusiasm at all the games Because of their dedication, they cheered our teams to victory. 52 Organizations J V Yell NEW SQUAD BEGINS TRADITION Frosh-Soph Cheerleaders formed a new squad this year. The purpose was to relieve J. V. Cheerleaders of their duties at the freshman and sophomore sports activities. Often last year, the freshman and sophomore games were without cheerleaders due to conflicts with the junior varsity games. This addition proved to be successful. Both the fans and the sports participants appreciated the new enthusiasm brought to their games. Through hard work, these girls heightened the spirit of all students, but especially the underclassmen. Below: Joetta Lane. Margie Rost, Cheryl Weller, Cindy Yount. Faith RcxJarte. Lori Kann (Head). The staff not only decides upon the theme, but also determines exactly what goes into the book, such as the cover and layout designs, where copy, special effects or color pictures are needed, the number of pages for each section and their arrangement, and much more The next important step in constructing the yearbook is taking pictures and obtaining information about each section. The staff, also at this time, sells ads, which are necessary for the money that goes to special effects and color Next, they draw layouts, write copy, crop pictures, compute headlines and put all this on final sheets Then the pages are sent to the publisher to meet a special deadline date The yearbook staff was fortunate to have a number of people |Oin this year They quickly learned the skills involved in producing a yearbook During the summer, six experienced members of the staff went to two conferences to improve their skills, and to obtain new ideas. The whole yearbook staff worked diligently throughout the year. 1 V V 580rganizations Yearbook Staff Staff members: Co-Editors Linda Kato and Sandy McCormick. Assistant Editor Lisa Northrup. While many may have had the mistaken impression that the candy cane business was a relatively simple one, in reality, it required organization and dedicated hard work. Not only did the candy canes have to be sold, but tags had to be drawn, filled out and attached to the candy cane. The tags depicted colorful snow scenes and Christmas scenes. Due to the club ' s well executed plan, the confections arrived on time for the delighted students. The proceeds were donated to the girl ' s athletic department. This year was the second year in which the girls purchased their varsity sweaters. Each sweater has the year the girl graduates and an emblem of the sport in which she participated. The girls proudly wore these sweaters to many school functions and club parties. President was Marisol Pulido and Advisor was Millie Ekedal. Bible Lit, World Odyssey, and English Honors were some of the other specialized English classes that helped to orient students to the many facets of the English language. Academics English 155 FUTURE SCIENTISTS The teachers in the Science Departnnent maintained a high level of achievement by presenting their courses in an enthusiastic and interesting manner The Cage provided a source of entertainment and interest to the people passing through the 300 building corridor, and the vivarium, a place unknown to most students, provided the Biology Club members and Green Thumbing students a place to raise and observe plants The sole field trip in the department was the Physics students ' visit to the Griffith Park Observatory Second Semester brought two long term substitutes to the Science Department due to the absences of Mrs Johnson and Mrs Dixon 1 56 Academics Science c COUNTING ON CALCULATORS The Math Department continued the tradition of being one of the school ' s strongest departments in academic achievements. It had a high enrollment in upper division courses including three full classes of Trigonometry and one of Math Analysis. The Math Team also entered the year with the tradition of sure success: however. Miss Hoyt was frequently heard referring to 1976 as a building year. The department ' s strength must be the product of the persistence of the students, but more than that, the enthusiasm of the teachers. Academics Math 1 57 BUILDING DEHER BONES The Physical Education Department acquired two new teachers. Barbara Robertson and Dave Clark Mrs Robertson coached the girl ' s tennis and gymnastics teams, and taught regular P E. courses, Mr Clark assisted in football coaching and instructed required P E classes also During February, the girl ' s gymnastic team sponsored the Cartwheel-A-Thon Members of the team had their friends and teachers pledge a certain amount of money per cartwheel, which the gymnasts executed during a limited period of time The proceeds went to the use of the team The department also formed the girls ' track team, coached by Glen Garson Money, donated by the Boys ' Varsity Club purchased a new tennis backstop for the Boys ' P E Department. The teachers of the department believe that lifetime sports such as bowling and tennis are as important as team sports and should be offered for the students Furthermore, through physical education, individuals not only have learned skills, but also have developed sportsmanlike relations with others, and have gained satisfaction and accomplishment. ry -- J 158 Academics P,E. Students provided their own transportation to the bowling alley, but || l| -■j-J fci-.A- ' they did not have to pay any fees for the use of the alley. i. . , ' ' ' This year ' s Co-ed program proved to be successful. Academics P.E. 159 THE SHOW MUST GO ON Fine Arts endeavored to develop the creativity of Students through art, drama, and music Heightened awareness was achieved through performing and creating. Art students at Troy High learned and developed further skills in painting, sculpture, and pottery Talented Instructors lent first hand experience and thoughts to broaden the students outlook toward art and the artist The art class was also a place where projects were planned and then worked to perfection until a useful or beautiful object was created giving the artist a true sense of achievement In the portrayal of varied characters, students in drama gained a new perspective of their inner thoughts and feelings They were aided by student teachers in perfecting mime, buiding sets, and other technical aspects. 1 60 Academics Fine Arts Instrumentalists and vocalists found personal expression through their music. Many achieved special recognition by being accepted to elite Southern California and California organizations for young musicians. In instrumental music, the Small Ensemble Vios revived once again. It consisted of a Stage Band, a Gypsies String group, and a Ragtime Ensemble. T.I. P., Troy Instrumental Parents was formed in an effort to enlarge the Music Department. Model Office was designed for self pace on-the-job training of fifteen different level office jobs. One unit of credit was given for each job completed. De-Co-Op enabled the student to work for wages in an occupation after school, where he used the responsibilities, knowledge, and skills obtained from the class. The department also supervised the student store. Students who signed up for the student store learned the techniques of managing and operating a store or business. Mary irginia Aldrich joined the staff and taught typing, business law, and business management. Throughout the year the business department tried to provide a variety of marketable skills that would benefit the students in their future careers. Academics Business 163 LAWS FOR LIVING Health was a one semester course required for Troy ' s sophomores The mam purpose of the class was to Impress upon the students the needs and methods of prevention and control of diseases, epidemic and otherwise The course not only instructed students on the subject of major diseases, but stressed personal health and hygiene as well The three main areas that the course dealt with are: infectious diseases, including venereal diseases; non-infectious diseases: and the mechanics of the body. Courses such as these have been said to be a key factor in the recent improvement of America ' s health standards. Driver Instruction consisted of the classroom driver education and in-the-car driving laboratory Students at Troy were enrolled for one semester of classroom and were scheduled for about three weeks in the car. In the classroom all phases of automobile ownership and operation were covered. Emphasis was placed on the safe, efficient, and economical use of the motor vehicle. The car laboratory covered lessons on the proper procedures of driving in all types of traffic and the use of all types of manuevers. 1 64 Academics Health-Drivers Ed, IB a B jT -; ■. CM-: , ' .V. THE FARM THAT WASN ' T A high school doesn ' t have to smell like a farm to have an active Agriculture Department. This is not to say, however, that Troy didn ' t have a farm. Students had special projects at other schools where they gained experience in raising livestock. A few students had room enough in their backyards for raising chickens, rabbits, and even steer, some of which were entered in judging contests at various shows including one at the Los Angeles County Fair. The Agriculture Department ran a total of three courses throughout the year: Introduction to Agriculture, Forestry, and Veterinary Science. One hundred and forty students stood behind Troy ' s Agriculture classes, and the instructor, James Higgins, has high hopes of adding a fourth course dealing with horses. The year ended with a giant barbecue banquet where selected students were recognized as having done an outstanding job during the year. Among the major awards were the Bank of America Award received by Steve Hefley, and the Dekalb Agricultural Research Award given to Mary Hess. Academics Agriculture 165 WHERE LEARNING COUNTS V i f. ' The Troy Learning Center had offered several new services in 75-76 : 1) An Introduction to Social Science Bridge Program for ninth graders which permits attendance in regular large group two days per week and small seminars in the Learning Center on the other days 2) An assessment service for students who want to find out how well they will perform on SAT, ACT or proficiency exams By taking a series of tests during few periods, they can select areas in which they need extra practice or review. 3) A Survival class that deals with consumer purchasing insurance, job-hunting and other basic skills has been available to students who want to know how to be self-sufficient after high school In addition, the program continued to offer individualized learning alternatives for students who need them. 1 66 Academics Special Education-Project Succeed HELPING THOSE WHO CARE For the first time in the school ' s history, students from OH-MH were able to enroll in the Industrial Arts Department under Woodshop. Instructor Howard Levine took one period away from Troys regular wood classes in order that the handicapped might have a go at it. Whether they did it themselves or instructed the ways that others might do it for them, the students were able to achieve successful completion, making the department ' s 1976 innovation a worthy cause. Academics OH-MH 167 IT ' S A SMALL WORLD ' Troys language department offered more languages than any other high school In the district The department taught five years of French, German, and Spanish: four years of Latin and Russian; and two years of Portuguese It also provided individual instruction in German and Spanish, Tom Hewitson, the department chairman, stated the department ' s objective as giving students a living, working, speaking knowledge of a language, people, and culture ■■3 In January the department held an orientation for a group of 8th grade students. These students visited language classes and attended a program presented by Troy ' s staff and students which depicted the cultures and languages of various foreign countries. The orientation proved to be successful 1 68 Academics Foreign Language Many teachers from the department worked with summer language camps. These camps provided activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and swimming, but were conducted In a foreign language. The teachers also have sponsored trips to foreign countries, where students lived with families while attending classes that Improved their speaking skills. Anne Kline and Jerry Hamilton escorted some Spanish students to Mexico during Easter vacation, and Finn Englyng planned a trip for some of his German students to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Academics Foreign Language 169 THERE ' S MORE TO IT THAN JUST BOOKS Until this year, the library had been the scene for socializing, and the place for studying only when everywhere else was full Students were never aware of all the material available through the library ' s functions The records, filmstrips, movies, microfilms, magazines, and many of the 28,000 bound volumes, therefore, went virtually unused. Finally drastic measures have been taken This year the librarians started requiring teacher passes upon entry, which may have been a bother, but practically eliminated theft, damage, and noise. 7k. ,  • , .A H ' High hope is held that Troys students will begin to realize the importance of the library ' s resources; and in joint association with Audio-Visual, the entire department feels that, when the students are ready, it can provide a great deal of service through the use of their multi-media 1 70 Academics Library-Audio Visual FLAIRS FOR HOMEMAKING Activity was brewing in the Home Ec. Department throughout the year. Sewing classes held two fashion shows. Fall and Spring, and Foods peaked their year with the March bake-off contest. Volunteer work was also a part of the department as a few advanced clothing students made a total of eleven smocks for the Red Cross. Academics Home Ec. 171 Troys Industrial Arts Department continued to give the students a chance to use their hands In building skills while having fun. Products made In Woodshop, Metalshop, and other courses could be found for sale to outside parties, although much of the work done was for personal use. 1 72 Academics Industrial Arts The skills taught by Troy are not difficult to learn, but good work takes time and concentration, which the students seem to have done without second thoughts. Academics Industrial Arts 1 73 A WORLD OF CLASSES FOR A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE Psychology was as popular as ever Three hundred of Troy ' s students found themselves and the others around them. As the field of Psychology grows, so expands Michael DuBrowa ' s topics. The future of the psychology department seems to be set. 1 74 Academics Social Science The Social Science Department offered more innovative courses than any other department at school. IVluch of this, of course, was due to the number of required classes, but the department still had a large number of electives. A large faculty and an enthusiastic student body brought the social sciences to their goal of high enrollment and high achievement. Academics Social Science 175 A SCHOOL WITHIN A SCHOOL m A It could have easily been referred to as Troy ' s giant step for ' 76. Through the enthusiastic persistency of a small group of faculty, an all new department was brought to its christening Eight teachers and over 250 students made up what people referred to as Alternative School. Almost anybody walking into former room 537 would have been appalled as to the interior decorating that had taken place during the course of the year; but to an Alternative School student, the room was a place of second-residence Couches and chairs could be found to lounge on, and good reading could be found on the walls, as there were enough posters and bulletins to supply a full day ' s reading and then some. Any personal or academic advice could be sought from any one of the present teachers. Together, the students and teachers helped each other achieve what each wanted out of school, and in so doing, created for themselves a sort of home away from home. y i 176 Academics Alternative School Not only did they make room 537 their home, they succeeded in making all of Southern California their backyard. Special field trips were arranged and taken to beaches, mountains, and museums. Other jaunts were taken allowing students and teachers to participate in biking, bowling, waterskiing, and one very special weekend of sailing. Perhaps the biggest activity of their year was the grand Alternative School picnic in which a good part of the population participated. Community projects were also an important part of some of the students ' schedules. Alternative School had stude nts teaching music at elementary schools and helping in health clinics in the area. Interschool meetings were held to exchange ideas and to discuss any matters of personal importance. This year ' s participants agreed that the experiment was worth whi le, and the instructors are looking forward to a growing department in later years. As individuals and as a school we worked for perfection. However, our endeavors were not made for public approval but rather for personal satisfaction and pride. We learned to apply our knowledge, skills, and understanding to the attainment of our goals, and if obstacles were placed in our path, a way was found to bypass them. Yet once a specific goal had been reached, we were no longer content to remain on that plateau but continually strived for higher levels of achievement. 317 I . . . THE FUTURE 318 ..« The satisfaction that comes with accomplishing a goal urges us to reach for higher ideals. Thus, as Individuals we are continually striving for improvement. Our quest for achievement will ultimately result in the betterment of ourselves and our society. Whether our endeavors take place in the past, present, or future, the spirit of achievement will remain an integral part of our lives. 319 n - ' .A l ' - (A. o- bP PcAn :kO ' ' _ o € ' -• ' v fv« ; ' „ r !oA w ' ( ( A V. ■T ' S : ' XPVA X) .0 ' v A 0 voKk ■1 ( c O CLx ,-v X , •. v .0 V j
