VARSITY FOOTBALL Troy’s football team had a poor season this year, losing all of its games. The team showed fight and spirit but just couldn’t keep it the whole game. With only a few experienced players, Troy’s team was composed mostly of Sopho- mores who had never played Varsity before. With a year’s experience behind them, there will be quite a few of the squad returning and the record for the coming year should be much better. With his sharp passes and timely shots, he should be a major factor in the coming year. SF Ge i A : 1955 -- REGIONAL = “B ™ CHAMPIONS 4 — a | “™ , Jim Murdock: Although Jim is only 5’-5’’ he was an all important man on the team. The scrappy ‘‘Mighty Mite’’ was a sharp-shooting crowd pleaser. Jim had 268 points for an 11.2 average and patrolled his guard spot with great skill. Jim was onthe All-League team and 2nd SOC team; and will be greatly missed next year. Jack Acton: Jack, a Senior, was on the All-League team, all SOC team and was honorably mentioned on the - All-State team this year. This 6’-13”’ forward had 365 points for a 15.9 point per game average and set the SOC record and team rec- ord of 46 points for one game. His uncanny reach allowed him to f : out-rebound many boys taller than 1 he and block many shots. Jack’s excellent ball handling gained him a starting berth for 3 years on the = Varsity squad. Jack was a fine Cap- —_ tain and will be missed by all. —— } | a ul | Bill Benson: A _ 5’-9’’ Senior Guard, Bill was a steady man at his position. He had a nice set shot and stylish floor play. Bill played his best against Lake Orion. Floyd Bailey: Standing at 6’-2”’ Floyd played a fine brand of ball all season. His markmanship, with hook shots and his hustling rebound- ing was a vital part of this year’s Rex Moore: Senior forward, Rex Moore, who stands at 6’ supported the team excellently. His fine ball | handling and alertness was out- team. | standing in aiding Troy to the Sem- Finals. ee Bll g 3 ee ) ie 4 - 28 - Ray Podulka: Standingat5’-7’’ Ray was a good pressure player at his guard spot. Although he was handi- capped by an overload of talent at his position, he is expected back next year stronger than ever. Richard Clippard: Dick’s best game was against Birmingham where he played a well rounded game. This 5’-10’’ guard was a competent sub- stitute and showed a lot of fight and spirit. Bill Swinson: A 5’-9’’ Junior forward who will be with Troy again next year. Bill has contri- buted much in his first year on Varsity. George Catto: Georgehasatwo- hand set shot which is coming along fine. He is 5’-8’’. George will be back next year better than ever. Richard Kelly: Richard will leave definite marks in the memories of Troy fans in the following years. The 5’-10’’ Sophomore is an excel- lent rebounder for his size. 1955 ce WN) PL Uely CHAMPIONS George Burnard: George,aSenior, came up fast in the end of the year and really showed his ability. The 6’-1’’ center helped out quite a bit with his rebounding and classy jump shots. RAFTERS WILD RANG WITH CHEERS .. . VICTORY OUR TEAM Le are BASEBALL The baseball team of 1954 hada disasterous season dropping every game. The future looks brighter this year though; because of the return of last year’s players who have much more experience, the lack of which was a major factor in their losing streak. Returning players who are Seniors this year are David Ogg, Butch Cischke, and James Morrow. Row 3: King, J. Truesdell, Mgr.; Mr. Hill. Row 2: M. Langford, G. Burnard, G. Choinski, F. Burnard. GOLF Troy High had a championship Golf team in 1954. The Varsity consisted of top-man Don Powell, George Catto, Bonne Char, Jim Hawley, and Dayton Shanahan. They won all their duel matches, were second in the regionals, and were 7th in the State. Don Powell, Captain, finished 7th in the Regionals. R. Gammon, Megr.; D. Tino, J. Northey, R. Kelly, C. Troy High ‘‘ran off’’ with the league trophy last spring. Scoring in every event, Troy was never in danger during the afternoon—their nearest opponent, Roseville, was left twenty-five points behind in the scoring column. Jim Pouget set a new league and school record in the quarter mile by } covering the cinder path in fifty-four seconds flat. Other firsts were taken by Fred Burnard in the hundred yard dashand two-hundred-twenty yard dash; Max Langford in the broad jump; and the eight-hundred-eighty yard relay team. i} No first places were taken by underclassmen during the afternoon, but they did manage to cop many points. Troy has good ability returning this year in all events with the exception of the sprints. However, the team has good spirit and has a good chance of retaining its spot at the top of the league in spite of | its lack of short distance speedsters. e oe The jewel of our thinclads last spring, of course, was Jim Pouget; state champion eight-hundred-eighty yard runner. Jim made the double trip around the quarter mile oval in the remarkable time of 2:0 2.8 minutes. Jim was second highest point obtainer as well as state champion. Troy’s runners copped a trophy in the mile relay at the annual Central Michigan Relays heldat Central Michigan College in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Jim Pouget, Fred Burnard, Tom Petterson, and Eugene Tomko covered the mile course in near record setting time—Two hundred yards ahead of the nearest contender. This was Troy High’s first track trophy. G. A. A. Row 4: C. Reed, P. Lowe, J. Brown, S.. Smith, C. Stehle, A. Akin, S. Laugh- ton, I. Thomas, Miss Buck. Row 3: G. Roy, J. Stewart, J. Aldred, D. Troy was defeated in the Regional finals by Melvindale. Pat Cullen, Betty Kujala, Nancy Taylor, and George Dila represented Troy in this Tournament.
