Troy’s 1953 football squad showed avery fine, aggressive spirit. Combining fine talent with good coaching the Colts bounced back from a disastrous 1952 season. A big, hustling line and a fast, plunging backfield overrode several bad breaks and emerged with a 4-3-1 season record. The losses to Avondale and Dexter could very easily have entered the victory side of the ledger. SMe Varsity Tso tcthal a Troy High’s first ‘‘Oakland B’’ championship rests in the trophy case due to the efforts of the 1953-54 basketball team. Going undefeated through the league cam- paign, the Colts also posted a fine overall mark of 13-3. The victories over powerful Roseville and the record smashing conquest of Clawson highlighted the league play. Out of the league the most sensational game was a double-overtime loss to Southfield. While compiling the best record in Troy history they amassed an amazing total of statistics. In 16 games they ran up a total of 876 points for a 55 point per game average. In the meantime they held their opposition to 636 and a 40 point norm. That championship trophy looks mighty good in the otherwise barren case. Con- gratulations to Coach Goodwin and the team! The whole of Troy’s 1953 power was in these two classes which means they are all returning to chow their heels again. Troy enjoyed mild success in five of the six major track meets last year and hopes to repeat this year along with a few additional victories. All of these things point to a strong 1954 campaign. Most of Troy’s points should come from the middle distances and relay which is where Troy is very strong. Fine spirit and a large turnout are expected this spring. These factors should aid greatly to Troy High’s high hopes of their first Oakland ‘‘B’’ conference champion- ship.
