Sl Illll MASS Graduation night has ended, The lights have been turned off, the front door has slammed behind the last proud parents and laughing graduate. In the auditorium a few wilted flowers, a few scattered programs, the tassels of a senior cap are the only remains for the class of '54, But wait! In the corner over there sits a lone figure. He gets up slowly and walks to the stage. He begins to speak as if talking to an unseen audience. I am the spirit of the class of '54, Of all of the boys and girls whom I was once a part, I alone am left. Soon I too must go to make way for the spirit of the. next class. But first,I would pause and remember a bit. We share many memories, the class of '54 and I. Why, I remember back in the fall, '49 when there were fifty-nine little folks that bounced into the eighth grade. That was a busy year, getting used to this new kind of life. Seems to me Mrs.Maddex and Mrs. Sutphin were sponsors. That was the year, too, that the school had its first Student Council. Think of that! Some of my folks have been members of th,e Student Council ever since it began. Then they were freshman. My! They felt grown up. Mrs. Drewry was sponsor that year, I remember one of the high spots of the year was when three of the girls were chosen cheer- leaders. One of them even made the cast of the one -act contest play, So Wonderful In White. Some of the boys began their football careers that year. We were really on our way, Came the fall of 1950, and now the halfway mark had been reached. Sophomore- wise fools. So much wisdom accumulated already that there seemed little left to learn! Yet, sur- prisingly enough there were a few crumbs of knowledge absorbed. The year rolled by rather serenely and before they knew it, they were Juniors. Juniors! Time for the junior play. Often that fall the auditorium looked darker and more ghostly than it does now as voodoo drums sounded and Drums of Death was readied for pro- duction under Miss Stone's direction. With the proceeds obtained, and from bake sales and movies, they entertained the seniors witha gala dance. That night the auditorium was decorated like a music shop. And tonight they ended their senior year-that is, twenty-six of them did. Mrs.Sifford was sponsor this year. They had all the high spots seniors could have-football games, basketball games, dances, Aa May Queen, senior trip, a senior play, their turn at being entertained at the Junior and Senior Prom. Now they're gone to be doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, farmers, secretaries, nurses, teachers, and housewives. And now I must be going, too. The Spirit of '54 leaves the stage, puts one of the wilted flowers in his button hole, sticks one of the programs in his pocket. The front door bangs shut. The spirit of the class of'54 has gone abroad into the world, . BUFORD SCOTT CHEVRCLET SALES, INC Buchanan Virginia
