lslr Yy 1 Trousdale County is located in the grand division of Tennessee known as the Central Basin Soil and climate haxe combined so as to render the region of prime importance in agriculture It has a land area of 106 square miles In 1930 the population wx as 5 629 Considering its S178 Trousdale is the wx ealthiest county in the state The total increase xalue in 1938 was S2 520 262 Until 1870 the history of Trousdale County was tied up with that of Sumner of which it xx as a part At that time the territory now in our county became 1 separate division It was named Trousdale in honor of William Trousdale W1ll1 m Trousdale The War Horse of Sumner was ffovernor of Tennessee from 1849 1851 He had been a soldier m the Creek War in the Florida Wars and had serx ed wx 1th great ability in the Mexican standing., quality that his political claims w cre not denied by the people Born in North Carolina in 1790 Trousdale died in 1879 two years after the new county had been created Hartsville selected for the capital was named in honor of James Hart an eaily and distinguished settler Trousdale County has had a leading part in the development of trans portatlon in Tennessee The first road in what IS now Tennessee ran from North Carolina In order to bu1ld up settlements in this section the mother state be fan the building of roads The North Carolina road or Avery s Trace was blazed out in 1788 Peter Ax ery a hunter from Washington district was selected as guide to direct the blaving of the trail thi ough the Wilderness This trace crossed East Tennessee and followed a rambling course by way of Fort Blount through T1 ousdale County on to Nashxille Over this trace came a num ber of immigran.s to the Cumberl nd settlements in 1788. In that com- pany vs eie such notable persons as General William Davidson Judge John McNairy and Andieyw Jackson. One of the first regular stage coach routes in this section later ran over this road betvn een Carthage and Nashxille. Today our county still has several houses supposedly built in North Carolina The census of 1930 rated the illiteracy in Trousdale County at 14.3. In spite of this fact vue haxe one of the most highly accredited school systems in Tennessee. Trousdale has what is probably the most completely con- sclidated school sy stem in Tennesse .
