OUR THEME This year let us weave the thought of skill throughout our book. Let us pause to honor those whose work is still the ideal to be pursued. For centuries the world has cherished the memory of the skilled artisans who have produc- ed the cathedrals, the printing presses, the tapestries, the musical instru- ments, and the host of other services that have 'made the world a better place in which to live. The skill of the ancient Chinese craftsmen will never be forgotten as long as a piece of their porcelain, their brass work, or their carved ivory and jade remains. The monks in ancient monasteries, copying almost forgotten manuscripts by hand, preserved for us by their skill the choicest learning of the past. A storehouse of treasures was left us by the skillful minds and hands of Cellini, Michaelangelo, and Da Vinci. Time passed and skills in other fields brought relief to a world suffering from plague and destruction. Ienner, Pasteur, and the Curies placed their skill at the disposal of mankind. Skill serves mankind. It beautifies: it teaches: it accomplishes. The work of the skillful is not destroyed by time or change. Let us struggle to preserve and seek to perpetuate the skill that is our heritage and pass to others our desire only to produce the best of which we are capable. 6
