CLASS PROPHECY I have sTaTed again and again and yeT again Thai- I am noT an ordinary gypsy, ThaT my readings of The fuTure are noT The usual hokum Of The TOFTUHS Tellers buT insfead are The real prophecies of second sighT. a True piercing of The veil. YeT here am l despife my proTesT, seafed in The wifness chair, arraigned on a charge of wifchcraffl The dreadful fear of imprisonmenT looms before me. IT frighfens me. I know I shall noT be able To plead my cause. Already I feel The misTs closing ab-ouT me. I wanT To be able To deny These accusaTions buT my ears are growing deaf To This world and To my faTe. Already I see The clear blue lighT ThaT enfolds me in my Travels. Now, I am floaTing1 Through space. The misT clears below me. I see a plaTform and hear music, rancous voices, and The um of a holiday crowd. IT is clear now. The plaTform belongs To a side show in The worId's IargesT circus. A man of disTinguished appearance is speaking. The voice booming ouT in ringing Tones belonges To Joe Sadlo. I-Ie is inTroducing Blanche Mormel, leader of one of The largesT orchesfras known ThroughouT The world. Over yonder Roy Espina is selling exTras which bash The familiar faces of John Brierly and Ben Bryk, famous ex Iorers iusT reTurned from Their explorafory Trip To Mars. The picTure of Nellie Barsochhi covers The fronT page of a Broadway paper. She is Touring The world, iT seems for The fifTh Time, wiTh her accordian, a famous one-man show. The SCSHS changes: I am on a Tennis courT in Key WesT. Florida. The swish of a swifT ball comes To my ears. Before me I see The IiThe figures of Arnold Dandrea, Edward I-lenry. Hilda Croisdale, and I-Ielen Bax, Olympic Tennis champions from The UniTed STaTes. Loud cheers of The crowd draw my aTTenTion To a nearby pool where The naTional swimming meef is being held. The vicTors are John GerTz and RuTh I-Iaungs. The crowd goes mad, buT is kepT wiThin bounds by The commanding presence of The fighTing STaTe Trooper of Texas, Jack Meierer and his side-kick, Joe Bielic. I recognize John Bankowski, The foreman of a large Cow Ranch in Texas, famous for his skill in Taming bucking broncos and winner of The recenT rodeo conTesT. Suddenly The large universify of NoTre Dame looms before me. Amid The yells, cheers, and waving flags I spy The famous fooTball squad running inTo The Held. I find I recognize some of The faces: There are Tony Lazonis, Mario Cenfofanfi, Eddie MarTino, Ton Bax, Charles Zipp, and Coach John Zikas. Among The specTaTors are many old acquainTances including Julian Woiick and Joe Ubaniak, famous sTooges of The screen. In The grandsTand apparenTIy greaTly excifed abouT The game is seafed The Mayor of Zilch Gulch, William Frose. Now The sound of Tom-Toms beaTs sfeadily upon my ear and wiTh iT comes The savage yell of naTives and a piercing scream. Before my eyes a naTive woman is being drowned by an enormous alligaror. IT is over and a sTillness fills The place as The hearTbroken young chiefTain of The Tribe- sTaIks slowly awa from The dreadful scene. I-le wavers and falls, a dagger pierces his hearT. Killed by his own hancli The deaTh of his preTTy naTive wife has been Too much for him. ThaT's sweII, I hear Lloyd Bridgeman, The cameraman, yell. Then confusion follows, for alas! The naTive was noT acTing. I-Ie has played his parT Too well, carried away by The emoTion in The scene he has acTually ThrusT The dagger info his breasf. The company docTor, Eddie Chrisfman, runs forward while Flora Marsico adminisTers firsT aid as nurse. BuT There is no hope. AnoTher Tragedy in The name of arf. BuT The show musT go on, of course. Though Charles Peck and CynThia Jones, The leading sTars of The screen producfion, vaIianT Troopers Though They are, find Themselves subdued and shaken. In The disTance looms Shark's Island, where hundreds of men Toil day in and day ouT, knowing no hope of freedom. They are prisoners, criminals of The IowesT Type, yeT among Them walks a sTaTely man, whom all love and admire for his kindness. I-Ie is a preacher, Their only Tie wiTh The ouTside world and Their loved ones. This kindly-faced man is Ross JirciTano. Guarding These dangerous criminals I recognize Angelo Perno, Edward MisTer, Willie Pychial, carrying on in Theri work aIThough hourly in danger of losing Their lives wiTh These men. Now I hear The busTIe and sTir of indusTry. The scene shifTs, I am back again in Niagara Falls and I see AnThony Nero and Edward Cyepinski working as FirsT Class Machinisvfs, Erwin I-Ioyle Teaching Machine Shop aT TroTT in place of our beloved Mr. Kaiser. and George Brinda working wiTh The lnTernaTional Paper Mill as leading No. I Truck driver. I see Television made possible by Eddie I-Ioyle: I see The famous InseparabIe Trio radio sTars: Tessie AsTorino, Theresa MarTino, and Olga Garcia. I see Ben Wozniak enTerTaining millions wiTh his crooning over The air, and I see Fred Moore is exalTed dipper of The Moose Organizafion. Darkness descends: iT is pierced by a bolT of IighTning. I hear The crash of Thunder, misTs again, The blue Iighf. and Then suddenly I am in The courTl I am on Trial! The spokesman of The iury rises To speak! WhaT will The verdicT be? GuilTy or noT guiITy!!! OLGA GARCIA, Class PropheT, N36 I '51
