He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1974 and spent a brief, but arduous tour there as a sailing instructor, followed by flight school. Earning the coveted Wings of Gold in 1' December 1975, He was assigned to HSL-35 where he deployed with DET 1 in USS RAMSEY CFFG 25 and DET l0in USS KINKAID 1fDD 9655 participating in extraction of U.S. citizens from Iran following the fall of the Shah. In 1979 Captain Kohler was transferred to the Washington, D.C. area as a member of the Lamps MK III Fleet Introduction Team. In 1983, Captain Kohler was a plank-owner and one of the first instructor pilots in HSL-41 and the Framp Department Head. His 5 next assignment was HSL-43's first Operations Officer and Officer in Charge COIC5 of DET 2 embarked in USS CURTS CFFG 385 under the operational command of COMDESRON 31, , prosecuting real world submarine threats in the Northern Pacific, and OIC of DET 4 in USS THACH CFFG 435 for her maiden deployment to the Western Pacific with the USS NEW JERSEY CBB 625 Battleship Battle Group. From December 1986 to January 1989, Captain Kohler 'served as the Lamps MK III Class Desk Officer for Operations- and Readiness on the staff of Commander, AntigSubmarine Warfare Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet. His subsequent tour from January 14989 to February 1990 was as Executive Officer of the SH-60B FRS, HSL-41. In February 1990, Captain Kohler transferred to the world famous Battlecats of HSL-43 as Executive Officoer and assumed command of the squadron the followingyear. -t 6 E S 5 K' ,- 4 Captain Kohler reported as Ope rations Officer aboard USS TRIPOLI CLPH 105 in June 1992. In December of that year, TRIPOLI demonstrated the Navy's maritime strategy, ...From the Sea , in spearheading OPERATION RESTORE., HOPE., 9 I 4 y , I I 1 ' ' He was assigned as the Chief Staff Officer for Amphibious Squadron-THREE in June, 1994. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, someUNavy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals and a bunch of other stuff. S.
