The mission of Amphibious Squadron 3 is to prepare plans, embark amphibious forces, conduct rehearsals, movements and perform assaults upon hostile shores in support of national policy during low intensity conflicts and as a component of an integrated battle force during major conflicts. This Squadron has the capability to land troops and equipment by air and sea simultaneously, and to support troops in the field with fixed and rotary wing transport and attack aircraft. When assigned to the Western Pacific, Phibron 3 carries a 2500 member Marine Expeditionary Unit QMEUJ plus the equipment and supplies to keep it fighting for up to two weeks. The staff has 38 officers and 81 enlisted men assigned for WESTPAC and is headed by Captain J. J. Gallagher, USN, who holds the traditional title of Commodore. ..,f. Starting with a port visit to Hong Kong and Singapore, the Master At Arms were tasked with keeping the crew safe and out of trouble. As TRIPOLI was once again summoned to Somalia, the ships law enforcers began dedicating many hours to preparing for the evacuations of American citizens from Mogadishu to Nairobi, Kenya. As one tasking for TRIPGLI and the Master At Arms diminished, another crisis arose. Our attention was directed to Humanitarian relief in Rwanda. Just when we thought we had a break, the Famous Fighting Ship was once again beckoned as Kuwait fell to the prejudice and threats of Iraqi troops along it's border. While anchored off the coast of Kuwait, the Master At Arms were tasked with standing antiterrorist, small -boat and anti-swimmer watches in the guntubs, once again keeping the crew ofthe Famous Fighting Ship safe and secure for another WESTPAC. They are responsible for the respon- sive operation of the helm, providing engine orders- to main control, and maintaining a careful lookout from horizon to hori- zon. When they are not on watch, they maintain the Boat and Aircraft Crane, the Foc'sle, the sail loft, port and starboard motor o whale boats and the Commodore's gig. At all times they are alert for the call of man overboard , when they race to the starboard motor whale boat to lend a hand to a shipmate in need. 5 Even in port, they man liberty boats and ready the ladders for embarking and debarking. Faas San Diego, CA Chicago, IL Sulphur, LA San Diego, CA O I O B - D1v1 s ion In the oppressive heat and dripping sweat of this feared Under- world, the men of B-division toil to produce the source of the ship's energy- 655 PSI steam. This steam generates electricity and drives the mighty TRI- POLI through its missions, to and from ports, and finally safely home. Throughout the deployment, B-division, kept the boilers steaming with remarkably few casualties. Three workcenters combined to produce this shining effort-EB01, EB13, and EB14. EB01 workcenter maintained and operated two 600 PSI Combustion Engineering boilers and their associated auxiliary equipment. EB 13 maintained the ship's gauge calibration equip- ment and essential maintenance testing of the Automatic Boiler Control System. EB14 received, tested and transferred over three million gallons of fuel. All of this performance came from a group that seldom shares the spotlight. Most noteworthy was the implementation of the Healthy Choice Food Items Program which was a resounding success from the planning stage through the execution phase. Items such as skinless chicken, crystal lite products, ground turkey, catfish fillet, just to name a few, were readily available and served as part of the regular menu. Forty knot winds nor Sadamm Hussein could deter food service personnel from providing an out- standing picnic and beer day for the crew and em- barked Marines. Social nights on Fridays and Satur- days as well as availability of fresh fruits and vegetables on the mess decks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week are the norm. 187 MSCS Gonzales, L. MS1 Angeles, A.
