CAPT. G. BRUCE MC EWEPI Captain Ci. Bruce McEwen was born in Greeley, Colorado on June 15, 1947. He attended Chaffey High school in Ontario, Califomia and graduated from the University of Southem California in June 1969 with a degree in International relations and Economics. He was commis- sioned through the NROTC Program and reported to Pensacola for flight training immediately upon graduation and was designated a Naval Aviator in October 1970. Captain tMcEwen's first assignment was to VA-195 flying A-7E aircraft at NAS Lemoore, California. He complet- ed a combat tour in Vietnam aboard USS Kitty Hawk CCV-655 in 1972, flying 188 combat missions. In 1975 Cap- tain Mcliwen reported to VS-41 in San Diego as an instructor during the in- troduction of the S-5A Viking aircraft. Subsequent tours of duty included as- signment to VS-55 in 1977, aboard Kitty Hawk and USS America CCV-663 in 1979. He then served as OIC of the COMASWWINCIPAC S-5 detachment aboard the USS Midway QCV-415 and USS Coral Sea CCV-455 in 1979-80 dur- ing the lranian hostage crisis. ln 1980 he returned to VS-41 where he served as Assistant Maintenance Officer. He reported to VS-57 in 1981 as Oper- ations and Maintenance Officer and deployed aboard USS Enterprise QCVN-655 to the Northern Pacific and Indian Oceans. After a short tour of duty on the maintenance staff of CO- MASWWINCIPAC, he reported as Ex- ecutive Officer of VS-58 in May 1984 and assumed command in November 1985. During this time the squadron deployed twice with the USS Ranger QCV-613 to the western Pacific to par- ticipate in multinational exercises. Captain McEwen reported to USS Ranger CCV-615 in April 1987 as Navi- gator and deployed once again to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. His most recent assignment was Ex- ecutive Officer onboard USS Indepen- dence QCV-62l from 51 July 1988 to 16 September 1989. Captain McEwen assumed command of USS Tripoli KLPH-105 on April 20, 1990. Captain McEwen has been awarded three Dis- tinguished Flying Crosses, two Merito- rious Service Medals, two individual Air Medals, eighteen Strike Flight Air Medals, Eight Navy Commendation Medals with Combat UV and numer- ous unit decorations and service rib- bons. He has accumulated over 6,000 flight hours 44,700 in the S-.'5Al and over 870 carrier arrested landings. Captain McEwen is married to the for- mer J'Ann Schneider of Vacaville, California. EXECUTIVE OFFICER Captain Duckworth was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was ap- pointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1965 and graduated in 1969. ln March 1971, he was designated a Naval Avi- ator. Captain Duckworth's initial tour of duty was with Helicopter Attack fLightJ Squadron THREE QHAL-55 in the Repub- lic of Vietnam where he flew over 200 combat missions in the UH-113 gunship in support of U.S. Riverine Forces in the Mekong Delta. His next assignment was with Helicopter Training Squadron EIGH- TEEN QHT-183. ln addition to his duties as a flight instructor, he eamed his Mas- ter's Degree as a result of studies at the University of West Florida. ln 1974, Cap- tain Duckworth retumed to sea duty in San Diego, Califomia. During this tour he was assigned to USS TRIPOLI CLPH- 1Ol where he made a Westem Pacific deployment and eamed his Surface War- fare Officer designation. Captain Duck- worth joined Helicopter Mine Counter- measures Squadron TWELVE QHM-125 in 1977 where he sewed as Nuclear Weap- ons Officer and Assistant Officer in Charge of a detachment that deployed the Western Pacific. ln October 1978, Captain Duckworth became a plan- kommer in Helicopter Mine Counter- measures Squadron SIXTEEN QHM-167 where he initially served as Safety Ofli- cer. He deployed with the squadron in 1979-1980 to the Indian Ocean and served as Operations Officer during the lranian hostage crisis and rescue at- tempt. Captain Duckworth's next assign- ment was to the Naval Military Personnel Command QNMPCD in 1980 where he served as Placement Officer for all Navy helicopter squadrons and the aviation type commander staffs. Captain Duck- worth joined Helicopter Mine Counter- measures Squadron FOURTEEN QHM- 14J while deployed in the westem Pacif- ic, and assumed duties as Executive Of- ficer in June 1985 and command of the squadron in January 1985. During his command tour, HM-14 won the Battle HE and CNO Safety Award. He reported aboard USS TRIPOLI QLPH-105 in San U 4 X0 'l Wah, XENN. ui -i CAPT. E.L. DUCKWORTH Diego in December, 1986 where he served as Operations Officer for two years. Captain Duckworth re- turned to Norfolk, Virginia in Janu- ary 1989 and assumed command of Helicopter Mine Countermeas- ures Squadron Twelve CHM-125, the CH-55E and MH-55E Fleet Replace- ment Squadron CFRSJ. He reported to USS TRIPOLI ILPH 103 in De- cember 1990 as Executive Officer. Captain Duckworth has logged over 4100 flight hours in various fixed and rotary wing aircraft. For his accomplishments he has re- ceived the Meritorious Service Med- al C5 Awardsj, Air Medal with Nu- meral 5, Navy Commendation Med- al, plus othercampaign and service awards. f Captain Duckworth resides in Coronado, California with his wife the former Kathy Welton of Lincoln, Nebraska. They are the parents of a daughter, Rim and son, Eddie, Jr.
