CAPT. G. BRUCE MC EWEPI Captain Ci. Bruce McEwen was born in Greeley, Colorado on June 15, 1947. He attended Chaffey High school in Ontario, Califomia and graduated from the University of Southem California in June 1969 with a degree in International relations and Economics. He was commis- sioned through the NROTC Program and reported to Pensacola for flight training immediately upon graduation and was designated a Naval Aviator in October 1970. Captain tMcEwen's first assignment was to VA-195 flying A-7E aircraft at NAS Lemoore, California. He complet- ed a combat tour in Vietnam aboard USS Kitty Hawk CCV-655 in 1972, flying 188 combat missions. In 1975 Cap- tain Mcliwen reported to VS-41 in San Diego as an instructor during the in- troduction of the S-5A Viking aircraft. Subsequent tours of duty included as- signment to VS-55 in 1977, aboard Kitty Hawk and USS America CCV-663 in 1979. He then served as OIC of the COMASWWINCIPAC S-5 detachment aboard the USS Midway QCV-415 and USS Coral Sea CCV-455 in 1979-80 dur- ing the lranian hostage crisis. ln 1980 he returned to VS-41 where he served as Assistant Maintenance Officer. He reported to VS-57 in 1981 as Oper- ations and Maintenance Officer and deployed aboard USS Enterprise QCVN-655 to the Northern Pacific and Indian Oceans. After a short tour of duty on the maintenance staff of CO- MASWWINCIPAC, he reported as Ex- ecutive Officer of VS-58 in May 1984 and assumed command in November 1985. During this time the squadron deployed twice with the USS Ranger QCV-613 to the western Pacific to par- ticipate in multinational exercises. Captain McEwen reported to USS Ranger CCV-615 in April 1987 as Navi- gator and deployed once again to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. His most recent assignment was Ex- ecutive Officer onboard USS Indepen- dence QCV-62l from 51 July 1988 to 16 September 1989. Captain McEwen assumed command of USS Tripoli KLPH-105 on April 20, 1990. Captain McEwen has been awarded three Dis- tinguished Flying Crosses, two Merito- rious Service Medals, two individual Air Medals, eighteen Strike Flight Air Medals, Eight Navy Commendation Medals with Combat UV and numer- ous unit decorations and service rib- bons. He has accumulated over 6,000 flight hours 44,700 in the S-.'5Al and over 870 carrier arrested landings. Captain McEwen is married to the for- mer J'Ann Schneider of Vacaville, California. They reside in Point Loma with their two sons Michael and Keith. F' CAPTAIN 5 A
