V-1 The flight deck has been called the most dangerous place on earth to work and rightly so. Up to 50 aircraft and 210 personnel can be assigned an assorted number of independent jobs associated with launching and landing aircraft. The hazards of the daily routine come in many forms, from searing jet exhaust to whirling helicopter blades. Jet exhaust can propel a person off his feet and over the side in seconds. Near supersonic speed helicopter blades tips can cause severe damage. On the flight deck, men move in many different directions. To the unin- itiated observer it looks chaotic. It's like an orchestra where each section perfonns a part of the overall sym- phony of amphibious flight oper- ations. Crew members are highly trained and specialized. They perform specific vital functions in the high speed, highly coordinated flow of flight operations. Each person wears a colored jersey denoting their job, responsibility and assigned area dur- ing aircraft launch and recovery oper- ations. ln support of Operation Desert Storm the V-1 Division safely conduct- ed over 59OO Hcombat missions. 1 ABH1 H.
