FACTS USS Tripoli QLPH-103 is an Amphibi- ous Assault Ship designed to trans- port helicopters and Marine Corps troops to foreign shores by launching an airborne invasion to land Marines behind enemy lines utilizing the con- cept knovrm as vertical envelopment. Tripoli also serves as a 500 bed hospital facility and minesweeping platform. Tripoli is 602 feet long and 84 feet wide, supporting a one acre flight deck. She is capable of accom- modating 2,500 people and 26 air- craft. This includes the crew of over 600 ofiicer and enlisted men and an assortment of Marine troops, helicop- ters and AV-8 Harriers. The ship has over 750 compartments, displaces 18,000 tons and has a draft of 29 feet. Her single shaft propulsion plant can produce 22,000 horsepower which can drive the ship at speeds in excess of 20 nautical miles per hour. Tripoli has the capability for distilling 100,000 gallons of fresh water daily. Her electrical plant is capable of pro- ducing and supplying enough power to service a small city. And as with most cities, Tripoli has its ovm Chap- el, library, barber shops, post ofiice, print shop, laundry, store, photo lab, radio, and television stations, three award winning dining facilities, weath- er forecasting office, and full service hospital and dental facilities. ii ui cf! 17 P 4' FAC TS 9 if
